Audio dropouts - plug-ins not loading correctly

An editors life is never easy -

suddenly Vegas 9.0c has begun to drop out audio w/o warning or reason.

It'll be playing fine and then silence. If I pause the playback, it comes back immediately - then drops out again.

It feels like a memory or cache issue.
Yesterday I upgraded my RAM to 8 gigs, although I'm still using WinXP Pro.
I'll upgrade the system to Win 7 Pro once I finish this job.

Meanwhile, I've cut Preview RAM to 0 and threads to 1.
This is the only way that my computer will render video.
FWIW the sound drops out at about 18 seconds into the show.

I wasn't too worried about it, but now a render (WMV) exhibits the same exact issues.

The tracks are continuous, and have worked perfectly until this AM.
There aren't but five lightly used audio tracks.
I rendered the video (1920x1080 Cineforms) to a single track and then saved the project and deleted all video tracks.
I even tried to render all audio to a wav but the same issue occurs.
I just want to get this job out of the house.

========
EDIT:
Now I'm getting an error "A plug-in could not be loaded" -
DETAILS: "The user preset for Sony Track Noise Gate could not be loaded. The defaults settings have been restored"
This error has repeated itself and included both "Noise Gate" and "Track compressor".
Because it's audio, it seems relevant.

Thoughts??

dunno what it could be, but this seems significant

Had the RAM installed professionally and then they tested it for 29 hours with no issues.

Could be...
I've been having nothing but problems with this job - which was shot on a Canon 5d and transcoded using Cineform NeoScene.

It's only 7 minutes long and has about 14 tracks of video, although not too much going on in any single track.

It's really a very simple project - sigh...

A Solutiion:

I opened a fresh project.
I copied all of the clips and pasted them into the fresh project.
It seems to be working.
