Still Images not possible???

Dave1 wrote on 4/8/2010, 4:19 AM
I am unable to add HD still images to my Vegas Pro projects. When I do, they usually appear as a "red box" in the timeline. When I try to play them, they are not visible.

I have emailed sony vegas support, who instructed me to "downsize" the images. I have downsized to 1200x1200, but tam still having the problem. Sony support tells me that all HD video will work, but still images will not. I am surprised by this, as the file size for the still images is at least 25x smaller than the video clips I use.

I have a computer intended for HD video editing - sony aw290C laptop, with 8Gig RAM, and a blue ray burner.

I would welcome any suggestions.

Many thanks,

Dave

What is a "HD still image"?

Have you tried other images .. like from a digital camera?

I've used hundred of still images in projects, though all of my Vegas video editing has been SD not HD.
I have included still files of 4000x3000 pixels without any problems.

I edit my HD video in FCP on a Mac these days because of replay performance problems I have with Vegas and AVCHD and I still use stills within FCP but I can't imagine that Vegas won't allow stills to be used in HD projects, it doesn't make any sense.

I have had problems with TIFFs in Vegas because it relies on QuickTime to handle TIFF images.

What file format are the stills you are using?

try using png files, they're vegas-friendly.

I am equally impressed by the inability to use simple still images in my projects.

I use a Sony HDRTG1 camcorder. I use Sony picture motion browser; I drag and drop the images and video into vegas.

The format is jpg. The images are usually 2300x 1700 HD

I am stumped.

Can I post images in this forum?? ( I can post an image of Vegas tmeline, to demonstarte the problem)

Not sure if this is your problem but could be if you are using Vegas Pro 9.0c 64 bit.

Known JPG and PNG issue with VP9.0c 64 bit

This is exactly the problem.
It makes sense that there is a known bug mixing AVHD video and jpg still images.
I do find this somewhat disappointing to pay for "HD professional grade" software that can't manage this simple request.
I hope sony creative comes up with a proper solution.
In the meantime, I will try the avi "work around"
Tank you very much xberk for sending me to the link.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.
I have finally received a straight forward answer from Sony Creative (attached below)

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software. This is an error we are most certainly aware of. I encourage you to wait until the next update of Vegas Pro 9 to see if the issue is corrected. I apologize, but I have no details on the release schedule of any updates for the software at this time.

We appreciate your patience and ensure you that we are working hard to correct this, and many other bugs in the software. If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.

Sincerely,

I've been holding on since V8 for a fix to this problem.

It is NOT confined to mixing AVCHD with stills or V9. I have uploaded projects and media to technical support that repro the problem in V8, not just V9.

I do not use AVCHD but do use a lot of large stills with mixed SD, HDV, and Cineform and have had many problems with render crashes, render errors (color and others), and red frames on the timeline/black on preview.

I always downsize them and make them png's but that only reduces the severity of the problem. They need to be a certain size for good quality zoom and pan. Vegas x64 reduced the severity but did not make it go away.
