iTunes, Quicktime Update, Mov's, Issues

MUTTLEY wrote on 3/31/2010, 1:48 PM

Earlier today there was an update from iTunes, installed, made me reboot, rebooted, opened Vegas and mov's on the timeline and they suddenly are just black, can't see the video. Ended up doing a system restore from before I did the iTunes update, after that opened the project and Vegas kindly informed me I didn't have Quicktime installed which meant I had to go install the latest version. Now back to square one. Quicktime files showing up as all black on the timeline. Anyone else get caught in this and any suggestions on how to get em to show up as they did before this whole debacle?

Why do you have iTunes on your editing machine? To avoid debacles like this, keep unnecessary software off your editing machine. In fact, keep it off the internet.

Oh gee, I'm sorry...

Maybe this thread would have helped:

Or how about this..

Do NOT update quicktime past 7.6.2 because it breaks Quicktime video on PCs. Not only in Vegas but in other applications as well.

Of course, a quick search for quicktime update or quicktime error would have netted you dozens of responses on this issue and how to solve it.

Sorry, I am a little testy today.

I got caught by this as well. And I'm pretty sure, I turned off QT's automatic update and I uninstalled the Apple Software Updater.

Thanks everyone, and no prob Perrone, happens to me all the time. =)

Uninstalling and getting an older version from Jøran's link did the trick. What a nightmare.

Get iTunes 8, version 8.2.1 which includes the last Vegas-compatible version of Quicktime, which is 7.6.2. I got that version of iTunes at http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=46.

And as buster says, turn of QT updates and Apple software updater.

If you've already run iTunes 9 and uninstalled it, it leaves behind a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which is not backwards compatible to version 8, so iTunes 8 will not run until that is remedied. I just removed it and "iTunes Music Library.xml" in my My Music\iTunes folder so that the whole library got recreated from scratch.

I am not seeing a problem. Which movs are causing the problem?

I see no problem either. I upgraded to the latest iTunes and Quicktime yesterday and everything seems fine.

Thanks for the heads-up, Ray

I am a casual Vegas Pro user and also use Itunes on occasion. So I deleted the latest update of Quicktime and Itunes, which I just installed yesterday, and downloaded the earlier version. Haven't re-installed it yet but I will have it just in case I need it.

Here's some info about needed QTime patches,

here's the article.....

Apple QuickTime update blocks media player bugs

Bad timing?

By John Leyden

Posted in Operating Systems, 1st April 2010 12:30 GMT

Apple pushed out an update for QuickTime on Wednesday that fixes 16 vulnerabilities, many critical.

Users of both Windows and Apple systems are advised to upgrade to guard against flaws that mean playing malformed media files using older versions of QuickTime can drop malware onto vulnerable systems.

Malicious image files also pose a problem for versions of QuickTime prior to 7.6.6, as explained in Apple's advisory here.

iTunes is integrated with QuickTime which means many millions of internet users will need to update their media player software.

The QuickTime update follows just two days after a major security updates to Mac OS X on Monday. This smacks of bad housekeeping on Apple's part and ought to prompt consideration of whether a regular patch update cycle makes more sense than springing updates on users.

Adobe, Cisco and Oracle have adopted quarterly patch updates for their products after Microsoft introduced monthly updates back in 2003. ®

Well on my laptop with Windows 7 64 bit version, when I updated to the latest version of Quicktime, any Canon clips dropped on a Vegas timeline show up as pure black. I rebooted again just to be sure. When I went back to the old 7.6 version the Canon clips would once again play from the Vegas timeline.

Is anyone using the latest Quicktime version successfully and playing back Canon footage from a Vegas timeline? If so, what OS are you using? Maybe it's only with some versions of Windows.

I have the same problem. Windows Vista 64, Vegas 8.0c and just downloaded Quicktime 7.6.6

I have a Canon HF100 (the files of which play fine with Quicktime 7.6.2) but I also have a ContourHD 1080p which requires QT 7.6.6 - The reason for downloading the update - so I'm stuck now until a fix is released...

Ok - really stuck. Ive been round and round on installing, updating, un-installing and reverting to older versions of QT and Itunes so that my MOVS play audio and video shows fine with Vegas - But NOW my problem is that I cannot connect my iPhone to itunes. It only connects to Itunes 9, which breaks everything else. Is there a way to downgrade my iphone software so it connects with ituens 8-2-1-6 or what?????? REALLY frustrated.

Branan, Vegas Pro 9.0d had a QuickTime fix in it.
You can also find and install QT 7.6.4.
I did that on my home machine with the latest version of iTunes and it still works properly.

ARGHHH - I am running Veg 8 - Apple says the only way to connect the iPhone now is to use Itunes 9 - which of course breaks the movs in Veg 8. I am on the phone now with Sony - they may have a newer fix, on hold now...

Did Sony get back to you? I am having the same issue -- upgraded to Itunes 9.2 which installed Quicktime 7.6.6 and now my Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c shows BLACK SCREEN in both preview and rendering!

I uninstalled Quicktime 7.6.6, installed 7.6.0 and Sony Vegas is working now, but iTunes is not working -- it's demanding 7.6.4 Quicktime -- but there is no Quicktime 7.6.4 for Windows, so what do we do?

Is there a patch from Sony?
musicvid10 wrote on 7/9/2010, 1:43 PM
You need to roll back to iTunes 8 also.
http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes

The last version of Vegas Pro 8 was released in September 2008.
There is no ongoing development effort that I know of.

I don't think iTunes 8 supports the latest iPhone-4 ... what a mess.

I don't think iTunes 8 supports the latest iPhone-4

Please explain why this matters.
mve wrote on 7/9/2010, 3:07 PM
I have iPhone-4 and it requires itunes 9.2. On the same PC I have Vegas 8 Pro which doesn't work with itunes 9.2 (specifically with Quicktime 7.6.6).

Are Apple telephones (or will they become) a major target for video content providers?

Does Sony want to sell it's Vegas Pro to customers who also happen to own iPhone and it's required iTunes which has to co-exist on the same PC?
