You can do that somewhat in editing. As far as doing it "live" you didn't say what type of microphone you/he is using. What type of connector does it have?

Is this a fixed shoot (at a desk or chair) or is the subject moving around?

Hi Brighterside,

He is sitting down and using a lavalier mic. If you go here you can hear a sample (after 15 second intro).

NOTE: The audio is compressed for the net.

My take on it is that as long as you're getting a clean undistorted signal, leave anything else for post. You can't easily remove anything you add while recording, so if you decide you don't like whatever it is later you're stuck.

Juicedlink has a nice camera mounted mixer (XLR inputs) with phantom power.

You don't need any pre effects or additional compression.
Just a teeny bit of reverb in post to reduce the dryness.

A videographer friend of mine swears by Sound Devices MixPre. It's a 2-channel Compact Field Mixer with Input Overload Protection. sweetwater.com/store/detail/MixPre/] . It's over $600 - but places "unclippable" input peak limiters in the signal path - and he thinks it's worth the cost. Battery and AC operated.

I believe the OP was looking for some DSP, which the Mix Pre doesn't have.
If I was going to buy a field mixer it would be the SD 552. [Corrected]

Who makes the SD-522 ? I have been thinking about a field mixer and I liked the idea of the limiters built into the Mix Pre - but it seems pricey to me.

musicvid, if you've been really good this year, maybe Santa will bring you one :-)

Mike, I'm putting up an oversized stocking as we speak, and a GPS on my rooftop.

Dave, SD = Sound Devices
Only I got the model wrong. The one that gets me excited is the 552
It's pricey too.

There are many great suggestions from this post thank you everyone. I'm leaning towards the Sound Devices MixPre from Sweetwater.

Cheers!

Sound Devices 552

yipes ! $2900

All Sound Devices products sound amazing and are good values for the price. If you keep it in good shape, resale value is at least 75% of retail too.

If you don't need extreme functionality, the MixPre is worth the small investment.

Yipes is right !!.
That's why musicvid gets so excited thinking about Santa leaving one in his Christmas stocking :-)
