Architect Unsupported Format - MPG

MrSongMan wrote on 10/7/2009, 7:56 PM
Hoping someone can shed some light as this is frustrating.

Bought S Vegas along with Architect on disc 2 years ago.

I begin my DVD burning process in Sony Vegas by selecting "Make Movie", in the Make Movie Destination box I then select "Burn it to DVD" then select "Save project markers in media", and continue the process till both an MPG video file and a separate audio .wav file is created.

The problem is the MPG video file that is created will NOT import into DVD Architect once it's created.

I've looked thru the manual and see no reason why the MPG file is unsupported.

I get an error/message saying.. " The file is an unsupported format" but I don't understand why. It's what Sony Vegas created and far as I can tell it should import and work.

Would appreciate it if you could shed some light and make this clear to me.

I thought using the 2 programs together should be a simple process but obviously I'm missing something.

Thank you for any ideas and help.

Jim

What step(s) are you taking to import the video?

Be sure that you're not going to File > Open and trying to import the file that way? The File > Open dialog is for opening DVD Architect project (*.DAR) files. Suitable methods for importing media include going to Insert > Media or dragging files in from the Explorer (either the one in DVDA or Windows Explorer).

If you are using a correct method, be sure that you are bringing in an MPEG and not some other kind of file. Vegas creates additional files for projects and for renders -- some of these files may have the same name (other than the extension) as your MPG file. Turn on file extensions if you don't already have them on.

Hi Rob,

I appreciate you taking time to try and help me figure this out.

I'm an audio guy and video's a new world and more complicated to me.

Yes, I've been trying to import by right clicking on the mpg file then selecting "insert media". Also I try dragging the file and I get the unsupported error both times.

After reading your post I did however go to the menu and select "Insert" then "media" and when selecting the folder my mpg file is in it does NOT show up.

In the "files of type" field the "all valid files" is selected and my rendered files don't show up. This would mean my rendered file, the rendered mpg must not supported.

Guess I must have the options for rendering in the wrong format or something. After reading manual I thought mpg was a supported format however when I select the drop down menu in the "files of type" the only mpg format that looks supported is mp4 quick time.

Possibly I just dont understand the best format I should use for my project so I'll post what I have and what I'm trying to do.

My edited and final video footage in S Vegas is about 1 hr 50 in length so it will fit on a DVD just fine. I'm a singer so the footage is of a performance I did.

For the record I have created a playable DVD with my footage and it works fine. I used a different program I have to burn it but don't like it. It won't let me use the MARKER options. So it does not create chapters of markers automatically.

Anyway..thought using Architect would be better and easier sense they are supposed to work together.

After looking at the drop down menu as stated above I see many supported formats... AVI of course, mp4, wmv. I know those are supported.

I just don't know what format to use for a good quality DVD. I believe AVI will take the longest to render. I think the MPG I did took almost a whole day if I recall.

Sorry this is so long.

I have relatives in town who want a copies.

I'd like to use Architect so I can have a menu with all my songs as chapters so they don't have to scroll thru all the footage to find what they want. I've already set all my markers in S vegas for the song titles so that's ready to go.

Let's back up -- MPEG-2 is the only movie format that works in a standard definition DVD.

1) When you render your project in Vegas, use the "DVD Architect" video template.
2) Then render the audio using the "DVD Architect" AC-3 audio template.
3) Then when you insert the video media in DVD Architect, the audio will import automatically and you will be able to prepare and burn your project.

(DVDA will also accept DV-AVI files and render to MPEG-2, but rendering in Vegas is preferred if the finished file size will fit on one disc.)

musicvid I think I follow you and thank you for posting!

I'll pull up both softwares now and try to follow your suggestions.

I appreciate the info and willingness to assist me however unfortunately no luck in finding a fix.

My search led me to this post elsewhere and it describes exactly what I believe my issue is...just have yet to locate the exact cause.

Well, that post describes exactly the wrong way to do it.

DVDA expects separate audio and video files created using the DVDA templates in Vegas, and not "NTSC DVD" or any other templates.

That means you will be creating one video-only file (.mpg), and one audio-only file (.ac3), for a total of two files.
Then, when you import the video into DVDA, the audio will load automatically, assuming the file has the same name before the ".".

Follow the directions above, which merely echo those in the Vegas help files, and try again. Good luck!

I have exactly the same problem

can someone please explain better what is meant by the using of the DVDA templates in Vegas, and not "NTSC DVD" or any other templates.

how do we use or set these up...

When rendering choose MPEG-2 as the "Save as type". Immediately beneath the save as type selection is a pull down list of templates. In that list choose the appropriate template starting with "DVD Architect". That's really all there is to it.

Keep in mind that all the "DVD Architect" templates do not include audio. This means that you'll have to do a second render for the audio as either a .AC3 file if you have a newer version of Vegas or a .WAV file if you have an older version.

Ok i see that in my Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platimum 9.

However
I have this insatlled on two machines.. one works fine and one doesnt....

I usually use Make Movie and Burn it to DVD. when it is rendered, it asks me to Send to DVDA. one PC does go thru and works.. (and I can burn a dvd and play it on my DVD (or any) Player) but the other PC gives me this error of the mpg file being an invalid format...

I have compared all the settings and the all look alike...

So cant work out why

I've never used the studio version, but I would think a simple test, Pete, would be to render a very short file on the PC that works properly, then see if DVDA on the 2nd machine accepts it. If it does, then the settings might well be different in Vegas. If it doesn't take that file, something's not right with your Sony apps, whether it's a screwed up install or incompatibility with other installed software or video drivers can't say.
