Subject:Placing Markers - SF 10a

Hi,

In SF 10a, I notice that sometimes if I press 'M' to place a marker while a file is playing, SF places the marker at the last place in the file that I clicked, rather than where the cursor is currently.

Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks.
Walt

If "Seek Cursor on Playback" (Options menu or "F" key) is not engaged and you click somewhere on the timeline, the marker command will insert at the 'flashing' cursor point. However you can hit "\" on your keyboard to cancel the flashing cursor. (Toggle last selection/cursor position)

Thanks, rraud. I'll try the '\' thingy, but this is happening intermittently. Most times it places the marker wherever the moving cursor was when 'M' was pressed. But sometimes it just decides to put it where the cursor was last placed, rather than when it has moved to at that moment in time.

Maybe it's more complicated in SF10a now, but I preferred the simplicity of markers being placed wherever the cursor is.

Thanks,
Walt

It seems that there are two cursors. Cursor #1 is the starting point of the playback, and cursor #2 is the current position during playback. I consistently get this behavior: During playback, pressing M puts a marker at the playback cursor, clicking the menu Insert -> Marker puts a marker at the starting cursor, and clicking the Insert Marker button on the toolbar puts a marker at the starting cursor. No combination of "Seek Cursor on Playback" or "Center Cursor" changes this.

I would like all markers to be put at the current playback position, but I can live with it.

Thanks, Charles. I agree: I would like markers to appear wherever the cursor is only.

Walt

The discrepancy that Charles describes will be fixed in the next update: on clicking the Insert Marker button (or Insert->Marker menu) Forge will drop the marker at the playback position (when playing).

Unfortunately, version 10.0b hasn't fixed this. I still find that markers are created where the cursor was 'last placed' rather than where it 'is now' in playback.

Also, SF is still not responding as quickly as previous versions of SF (SF 8 backwards), in that when I click a point in a file to place the playback cursor and then immediately press M to place a marker, the marker appears at the last place the cursor was because SF hasn't responded to my mouse-click. Very annoying when you've a ton of editing to get through.

SF10b (B474) drops markers at current play-cursor position, while playing, for me . Also , while stopped, if I reposition the cursor and press M it puts the marker at the new position, just as you'd expect.

This couldn't be tied up with 'Play-Pause' versus 'Play-Stop' space-bar option selection , could it ?

Not sure, Geoff. I do use both Play/Stop and Play/Pause so maybe you're onto something. When I press M, sometimes a marker is placed where the cursor is, sometimes where the cursor was last stationary. Just as in ver 10.0a. Regardless of whether I use Play/Stop or Play/Pause, I need markers to always appear where the cursor is, not where it was.

Similarly, I also find that if I place the cursor at a certain point on the timeline and press Play, SF occasionally plays from where the cursor was previously. This is particularly irritating as I may have rewound or moved on a good deal to place the cursor and this brings me back to where I last was, losing my new play position.

Tried setting the both play/pause/stop scenarios and still works OK for me. Maybe there is another setting, or interaction between several other settings that are giving you this behaviour.

HAve you customised any settings ? If so maybe reverting to defaults may narrow it down, if it fixes it....

"Seek Cursor on Playback: (options menu) can effect behavior.

Hi Geoff,
It's in "Options> (NOT Preferences) Seek Cursor on Playback" (immediately below "Loop Playback") The keyboard shortcut is 'F'. Same location and shortcut in SF-9.

Doh ! I was look under Options | Transport.

Makes no difference in Marker dropping for me. But possibly haven't tried all the options combinations. I DO remember the problem having occurred for me some years back in a previous version. I think it went away with an update....

Hi lads, thanks for the comments. Seek Cursor on Playback is off, which the way I want it as I don't want SF to jump to wherever I place my cursor on playback.

I haven't made any bizarre customisations that I wouldn't have used in previous versions; just snapping, zero crossing, slow scroll - those types of options.

Sometimes I rewind a lengthy piece of dialogue, place my cursor at the point from which I want to play next, press PLAY and it jumps all the way back to the previous point and I totally loose track of where I am. If I try to place a marker, same thing happens. But it's haphazzard; sometimes it works OK, sometimes it doesn't. I find this extremely frustrating, though.

Thanks,
Walt

Hi guys, this is still happening for me, but I've figured out what the problem is.

OK, so if I press PLAY and then press M, a marker will appear wherever the moving play cursor is located at the time, which is perfect.

However, if I press PLAY and then move the window's scroll bar a little, then press M, the marker will be placed at the last stationary position of the cursor, not where the moving cursor is now. This is the bug.

Is there another patch planned and if so, can this be fixed?

Thanks,
Walt

Very easy workaround is to press the \ key before pressing M. That will force the two cursors back into sync so that the marker gets dropped at the current playback position.

Thanks for that, Chienworks, but if you're zipping through a file, pressing M all the time, it'd be very easy to forget to press \ before M. Unless I just get into the habit of pressing \ every time I'm going to press M.

Would be nice if it was fixed, though.

Thanks,
Walt

The habit i get in to is after i've done anything at all i finish it by pressing the \ key. It becomes completely automatic in short order. That way the cursor situation is always ready for placing a marker.

Will give it a go, Chienworks. Thanks for your help.
