Movie Studio 10?

I currently have Vegas Pro 6. I've struggled to get it to work properly in Vista and am about to upgrade to Windows 7 so think it is time to upgrade Vegas. I am just a hobbyist and can no longer justify getting the Pro version so am thinkingh of just getting a more up to date Studio version. However, is 10 due out soon? I don't want to upgrade to 9 platinum if 10 is about to arrive.

Going from Vegas Pro 6, I would UPGRADE to Vegas Pro 9 instead of downgrading to any Movie Studio version. There's so many limitations that you're not used to having that you may get frustrated. Want more than 4 video tracks, sorry - can't do that anymore. Need all the track compositing modes, they're not all there. Velocity Envelope - oops, that's gone too. And the list continues to grow...

Thanks Edward. I don't think i can justify it though. I really am at the consumer end of things - I couldn't really justifying getting 6 pro when I did (or 5 before that!). Also, I have Boris FX 9 which I use as a plugin and it seems that using that in Movie Studio gets me round some of the limitations (i.e. secondary color corrector, 3d track motion, numbers of tracks).

Do make quite certain that Boris works in VMS before you go down this route. I don't know for sure about the current version but I'm pretty sure that earlier versions of VMS could not use plugins like Boris.

Dowloading the demo of VMS should tell you one way or the other.

Thanks Mark. I've downloaded the trial of VMS 9 and Boris FX 9.0 seems to work just fine.

Jack, VMS Platinum 9 lacks custom redering options for MPEG-2 (MainConcept) and only accepts 4 video tracks. Some of the advanced features like scopes are missing too.

I must say - I am in a similar boat ...
Started with Studio (4?) graduated to Pro (Vegas 6 and 7)
and now thinking about back to Studio for 90% of what I need and using my stable version 7 for when I need lots of tracks etc.
(I would love version 7 with addition of AVCHD)

As a prosumer/hobbi-est I sometimes think that Pro is moving away from me

Glad it's not just me Kraz! Musicvid - I'm not sure I've ever used many setting in the mpeg2 encoder. I tend to just encode to DVD using teh standard DVD Arch setting. Also, I'm not sure I know what a scope even is! I guess I really don't need the extra power of Pro (even if it might be nice)!

Actually I've had fewer issues with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro 9 than I have with Vegas Pro 9. AVCHD editing in VP 9 for my Canon Vixia movie files is still buggy (waiting for a new patch) without transcoding, where as I could edit these files in Vegas Movie Studio without a problem.

If you need more than 4 video and 4 audio tracks, secondary color mixing or want to do masking or other advanced editing processes Vegas Pro is still one of the best Pro options around for the money. If you don't need all those bells and whistles then Movie Studio is a great alternative.
