"Melt" an image FX???

kentwolf wrote on 10/9/2009, 7:23 PM
Does anyone happen to know off-hand what sort of FX might be able to create the effect of a (controllable) slow melt of an image? Hoping to maybe get something on this for this weekend.

I use Vegas, Red, AE, PI3, etc. etc.

I thought I maybe had a lead on one of my Digieffects HSL displace filters, but it was not what I am looking for.

I don't need an explanation how to do it (I don't think). Just looking for what software/plugins might be able to accomplish this.

I searched this forum too to no avail. I guess I thought this effect might be a little more common than it seems to actually be.

Thanks!!!

I think I have just the ticket. Here's a low res wmv sample of a clip of melting film.

Sample video

If you think it will work for you, here's an mpg2 version (2.8mb).

Zipped mpg2 file

Thanks, Doc.

That is pretty close.

I am looking to be able to apply an effect(s) to a particular image file.

Question: Are/Were you a Navy Corpsman?

"I am looking to be able to apply an effect(s) to a particular image file."

The displacement map FX driven by something flowing / organic or the distort FX.

As you've got AE there's a mask FX (turbulent?) that causes pixels to flow at the boundary. That should do the trick nicely come to think of it.

Sorry the clip wasn't helpful.

I was a Navy Dental Tech. Two years at Pearl Harbor and a year and a half aboard the USS Oriskany. 1963 - 1967

If you're interested, here's my USS Oriskany website (I was aboard during the fire).

I used I pic of turbulent water convert to B/W
Then at the top running down progressively getting lighter airbrush or paint in graphics editor dark grey to white in a melt fashion
There is a pic at end

Use this as a transition and use the same pic as height map with a slight zoom pan for movement

Pic of layout in vegas is at the end of clip

You can also use shots of steam ,smoke etc to get text in and out or any other media in the same fashion and the results will be much better

Backward in Boris red as a plug in in Vegas using pic luminance as transistion

Boris Red has a filter specifically for this called BCC Burnt Film.

I don't know what Kentwolf is really after but burning is not the same as melting. Burning an image is pretty easy. A displacement FX with the right mask works quite well as xfx has shown but the result is nothing like something melting into liquid and flowing off the screen.

A search found this very topic on the AE forum at COW. Suggestions were the Mesh Warp or Puppet Tool. I tried the former. Not easy to get looking right, it can be made to make the pixels appear to flow off the screen but there's no diffusion of the pixels as there would be when something melts. No doubt it can be done but it'd be no trivial task.

Hello Rory,
I love this Vegas height map melt...
I imagine that one could melt the top image into another image underneath?

Pretty cool...

Thanks for sharing...

Until that time... Earl J.
