I've been here since 5, and am currently sticking with 8c, primarily because retirement doesn't pay quite as well as working did. Otherwise, I'd probably would have upgraded. For my relatively unsophisticated usage, versions 5, 6, 7 & 8 have been reliable and productive.

7.0d for all editing. For me, it is bullet-proof and fast. Any annoyances it may have are just that: annoyances. No bombs, and I've never been "stranded" with any intractable problem that forced me to start over. I often have four or five instances running at once.

Marvelous program.

I use 8.0c to transcode AVCHD to Cineform so I can edit in 7.0d. I also use it for some MPEG-2 and MP4 rendering. I seldom edit in 8.0c, although I have done so a few times and have had to save several EDLs to transfer individual tracks to 7.0d so I could finish the project.

8.0c is usable, but definitely not bulletproof.

8.1 was a bust. MAJOR problems.

I am not even remotely tempted to try any version of 9.x, given the remarkable number of problems reported. I suspect that much of it was derived from the buggy code in 8.1. Version 9.0 received unbelievably positive reviews in this forum in the first week or two after release, but in retrospect, I think people posted immediately after finding one or two things they really liked, but before they had really "exercised" the program. It appears that people with really narrow workflows which don't get into the problem areas are happy with this program. However, I do projects that stress virtually every aspect of Vegas, and therefore I need a complete program.

Still have 6, 7, and 8 on system.

Have been sticking with 9.0b-32bit on brand new system and so far have not found any showstoppers.

FWIW .. Still mainly produce SD video, so some of the HD related problems have not had a huge impact.

I'm using 7.0e, which for me is rock solid.

I never did get version 8 because I was running Win2K and could not upgrade without first getting XP. Now I have Vista and I did upgrade to 9.0a for a short period of time. However, the instabilities of that release forced me to roll back to 7.0e to get my work done. Perhaps when 9.0c (or d?) is eventually released (and is stable), I will install that. Until then, I rather have a product with fewer features but with greater stability.

Doing most work on V6 or V5. Bought the upgrade to 9 mainly to be able to work with mp4 files which I do on a very limited basis.

Will buy a new PC once Win7 is released and will then see how V9 64bit behaves for me.

Started with 8C on Vista, now using 9b on win7 (release candidate) on a quad and so far works great. When WIn7 final release comes out later this month will move everything over and hopefully it all will still be solid.

Cheers

Vegas Pro 8c and 9b

I have to use 8c for any DVX footage shot in 24p ( lots of my content usually ). 9 been great for other things once that text issue was resolved (wow that was bad :| ), but I usually just do SD WS projects, and am not dealing with HD content too much shooting for an EX-1 and so I'll certainly appreciate the drop in .mp4 files from the cards w/o converting.

8.0c here.

9b and 8c

We had a few long-form projects already started in 8 & didn't want to convert. Also work with some editors still on 8.
But systematically we are moving off of 8 and onto 9b for everything. (80% SD, 20% HD / HDV) and all 32 bit at this point.

I'm using 9b, both x32 and x64 version. No problems. I did have a very elaborate 8c veg that I needed to render that wouldn't finish rendering in 9b/32, opened it in 9b/64 and was able to complete it. Had to install Neo player and one of Cineform's demos to get cineform support in x64, but after that it was rock solid. Zero problems with new veg's.

I liked 7d Still have it!
Had lots of issues with 8a,b & c
Really like 9.0b using Vista 64 bit. Works like a charm.

I've got every version from 4 to 9 on various machines.

V6, still used for audio only jobs and recording on my laptop.
V8.0c gets a lot of use inc XDCAM EX.
V9.0 still in beta from my POV. Done a couple of jobs with it, not bitching, it'll get there.

V9.0B but just dabling with it, checking, thinking, waiting, playing around, getting more familiar with about 1 gig worth of Vegas processes I am unaware of. I still wish they had a block and arrow tutorial for the hard stuff that I can't remember.

I've been with Vegas ever since it started life as an audio-only multitracking program.

Currently I'm using version 8a.
(I had downloaded 8c, but I guess I've never installed it.)

I bought the v9 upgrade, but I probably won't install it until I go to a Win7 64bit machine, which I'm not in any particular hurry to do and which I can't really afford to do just now anyway.

v9.0b all the way (32 and 64 bits) very solid for me.

Doing some serious stuff and so far so good, very happy!

Love the UI.

Using many new features and filters from v9, wouldn't want to go back to v8.

Great thread idea.

I've got 8 and 9....but...7d is my go to. It may go down as the most crash proof NLE ever made.

I've got 9 loaded on my three year old AMD x2 machine but it just isn't reliable. I imagine that the age of my machine is an issue and I'm going to be putting a new machine together when Windows 7 comes out. 8 had a couple issues that I can't recall right now but 7 just friggin works!

I find it interesting that a lot of people are using older versions of Vegas. I think the message is pretty clear - stability is king. People are even willing to give up features or use work arounds for stability. If anyone is looking for a direction for the next version of Vegas, I'm going with " I dare you to crash it!"

Make an NLE so solid that it could go head to head with FCP, Premiere, Edius, Avid, etc and be the last one standing when everyone else is staring at a blue screen/reboot/showstopper. That's the NLE I want!

Hello everyone,
interesting thread... and just as interesting, this question was not included in the personal system information each of us should fill out for research and troubleshooting purposes... perhaps this thread might get those genius Sony guys to include software version in the personal system information form.

Although. . . it is probably likely that those wise old Sony guys expect all of us loyal fans to install and use only the most current version... (grin)

I use 8.0c myself with 9.0 still in the box... perhaps when I get a new machine and can run 64-bit, I might install it there... perhaps not. . .

Until that time... Earl J.

I am using 8c on Vista 64, haveing some mouse problems on the timeline ( as others are ) but other than that it is quite stable, will go to 9 when the bugs are worked out ( but I really do like and want the darker interface) but wil wait :-( Happy with 8 for now does all that I need.

Started with Vegas 2.0, then 3.0, then 4.0 (my favorite)

Stuck with 4.0 until sometime after I bought a Sony PMW-EX1 camera. Then I upgraded to Vegas 8.0 just this past spring. Haven't had any problems with Vegas 8.0c yet. Still use Vegas 4.0 on my Windows 98 machine.

Vegas 9.0b 64bit on Vista. So far it has been rock solid for me. Most of my work now is AVCHD and 8.0 and 8.1 gave me lots of problems.
