Pro talk on Avid, Apple, and Adobe

Avid's a sinking ship?

"Apple's just a gadget company" (of course I already knew this :)

"FCP is ancient code and so is Avid code.... new code will be written more like Vagas" !!!!

"Adobe is a good line of products. CS4 and flash becoming dominant"

Interesting interview but the full quote was '...new code will be written more like iMovie or Vegas' and iMovie, as stated earlier in the interview, isn't used at the Hollywood end of production.

The question is, was he referring to the software functionality or the market end that the software is aimed at because that's where they'll make more dollars, Pro or Consumer? I'm really not sure because the discussion immediately prior was all about where the major profits were being generated and 'Pro' apps were described as a tiny part of the picture.

So although AVID and FCP are as it was put '...based on ancient code' was the point based more about whether companies like Apple and AVID would commit the resources to develop their Pro applications as the 'bean counters' take over or would they concentrate on developing their consumer products and, in Apple's case , gadgets? Unfortunately the focus of the interview changed at that point so I'm not sure.

The talk of Adobe becoming dominant and BBC and Disney ditching Avid and FCP in favour of Premiere and the obvious rise of Flash as a medium for online delivery and potentially in new generation TVs seemed to be the biggest message in this interview.

I'm not rushing out to buy Premiere right now though.

Thanks for posting the link Blink.

Yeah... i know. I was kind of recalling the quote from memory. I thought it was a blast to hear Vegas even mentioned though. It seems Vegas is known about at those levels.... and to be recognized as "new code".....

How funny. Some time ago I said that I believed that Adobe's back door assault on FCP could be a good thing for Vegas. This was at the same time that Adobe were the only people mentioning the word "Vegas" to packed auditoriums while Sony themselves seemed to be trying hard to ignore it's very existance.

Adobe have the resources, they have some of the same people that wrote the code base for FCP. Vegas has neither of these but it's no shame on Vegas if it does get a free ride on Adobe's coat tails. It'd be great to see Vegas work a bit better with Adobe's products. The "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" mindset is what seems to be holding Vegas back at the moment.

That seems to be the main issue that is voiced in the "pro" world. Most people who try Vegas like the software.

Couldn't agree more. Vegas is a great stand alone NLE but needs better integration with the raft of other software used in the 'Pro' world. Here I get back to things like a fully functional AAF that can import AAFs from other platforms, BWF rendering, the list goes on....

As Blink has said it's good for it to be recognised at the 'Pro' level but being grouped with iMovie as 'new code' isn't really being accepted in the 'Pro' arena.

It reflects more that both Vegas and iMovie have had regular new releases over the last four years while programs like FCP and AVID have remained fairly static based on 'ancient code'.

I love the comments about flash deliverables also. I agree this is the future. Most online services are streaming in flash. Sure would be nice to see an app that can edit an .flv directly on the timeline.

DPX and EXR support is a step in the right direction for working with other apps. Both of these image formats are standards for studio pipelines. That also ties in with going 4k.
I'm hoping ver 9 marks a starting point to addressing all these issues.
