have been playing with it for a while.... (these are my observations on winxp sp3 32bit, ymmv)
1. chromakey colour picker stuffed up, looks like you're picking a pixel - drag box gone.
2. protitler is flickering as badly as ever (nvidia 8500gt)
3. the new grey gui is pretty - but i've got used to the original scheme. (who the hell works in 'editing booths' on vegas anyway?)
4. there's a number of threads about how hdv capture is STILL not fixed. (to be fair, i use sony capture, with no scene detect, and occasionally have an hour tape cut into 2 or 3 segments - i can live with that)
5. can't really judge if there's any major preview / rendering speed to be had on my e6600 with 3gb ram - but i'm looking at v9 for my new i7 box coming next week - where i hope to see some!
6. there's some chintzy sparkle effects and the like, which look a little tired and old fashioned before i've even used them.
7. this forum is split between the fanboi's and the whingers - so i'm opting for the middle road by buying cheaply with the upgrade offer, keeping 8c on the box, and eagerly awaiting 9a!
Well, I got everything I was looking for... and then some.
- trimmer now works with 5.1 sound
- the flat lined LFE channel fixed
- avchd no recompress rendering
- more effects
- M2TS files no longer being recompressed in dvda
- backwards compatibility for all my various settings
- some of the standard templates reworked so I don't have to customize
A few cons that I feel should have been addressed:
- I think SCS have taken VFW about as far as they can and it really is time to start SERIOUS upgrade in that department.
- HDV capture utility still frail and needs work
- avchd render bit rates need to be increased beyond 16
Overall, I would have to say that this release is a home run and it sure is going to make my avchd editing a lot more enjoyable
Good job SCS!
V9 seems unstable on my core 2 duo, 2Gb RAM, XP with SP3.
It is very easy to get V9 to use 100% of CPU, causing hang up. I think I shall stay with V8 and await 9.0a.
As a matter of interest win xp report looks like this

a) Is it worth upgrading. Yes although I too will leave it to rippen for a while.
b) Is it a winner. No. Vital issues probably tied to core functionality have still not been addressed. More and more 'stuff' seems to be bolted onto the original framework and the walls propped up. New foundations are needed.
Certainly it's good to have a reason to give SCS their share of my profits. It's been an awefully long time between drinks for them. I just hope it gets used wisely.
If SCS had:
1. Worked out the Cineform playback/resizing issue prior to release;
2. Bundled Production Assistant and Cineform NeoScene with V9, and;
3. Kept the upgrade price in the $150 to $200 range for all the above.
They would have hit a monster home run out of the park.
As it is, I'm still on the fence and wishing I had a bit more in the bank account.
"who the hell works in 'editing booths' on vegas anyway?"
Hey I resemble that remark, my Last name is Booth and I have Vegas on a Edit only Computer and it is in a small room and when I am in that room there is a Booth in a Booth editing.. man what a rush, so anyway, Yes I use it in a booth... :-))
worth upgrading I think, it loads faster and that alone is worth buying it for... :) plus the new interface looks more professional, and all the minor changes make it well worth getting...
As of the moment I just can't past some issues that I'm having with playback acting goofy and red and black frames appearing, read more here: Thread : Anyone else? Playback issues?
If I can find resolve to this I'll be more than happy with 9. I guess my advice would be try the demo and if you're not one of the unfortunate souls that the playback problems, totally worth it.
Running good for me thus far with my I7 core setup, Working with a recent project with multi camcorder footage, Vegas 9 has performed flawless, I like the new layout and the render times are a little quicker than Vegas 8 with avchd footage...I have the trial version thus far and will be purchasing the upgrade later this month when the money is available...well worth the 185.00 upgrade price....

I am having this issue on my system. In the past the box would fill in black if I used Aero Glass but worked by turning it off. Now I cannot draw the box at all. That is color correction, Chroma Key, etc.
Vista 32bit Ultimate on nVidia 8800GT. I cannot load the latest nVidia drivers because it causes my monitors to switch to portrait mode and I cannot resolve the problem.
