Nice I actually see lots more reasons to upgrade by reading the document than by what's available on the sony info pages...

Thanks!
At the end of E.Troxel´s newsletter he mentions a
trialversion of Vegas 9 - is there any available?

Odds are that there won't be a trial version until it's officially released so you'll have to wait until (at least) May 11.

Is there any way to get in touch with Ed? I tried to log into his web site - but says I've been BANNED! I don't remember posting anything - let along offending anyone.

Any chance his newsletter is posted somewhere?

http://www.jetdv.com/tts/TTS07-01.pdf is the direct link.

...REALLY great stuff. This new version really pushes through some Vegas short-comings. And it reduces the number of 3rd party tools needed for several tasks. That's wonderful.

Vegas 9 is slated for release in May

It all sounds great, but the upgrade pricing, even for a download and with $50 off is a bit too steep, even though it is competitively priced with Adobe Premiere upgrades, etc... I'm going to wait and see how everyday users of Vegas 9 "review" the product and then decide. That's worth $50 to me, these days.

My apologies to anyone who is bothered by this, but I am simply bumping this thread because I think it scrolled off the main page so quickly in the flury of Vegas 9 postings that many people may have missed it.

Ed Troxel has a very nice, detailed description of Vegas 9 user interface enhancements here:

(link copied from RS170a's post a few posts up)

Note to Ed: It might be a good time to update the Vegas box artwork on your newsletter masthead... :-)
rmack350 wrote on 4/22/2009, 6:42 PM
I'll give it another bump. One detail Ed described was that Vegas now has a built-in option to export image sequences, just like any other render.

That made me smile. They're listening to people.

I think you can do this with Vegas 8 too - Auto duration when adding to the time line with crossfade -- what's the new feature / enhancement that 9 brings?
ushere wrote on 4/22/2009, 7:52 PM
all well and good, but i'd like to see the release notes to see what's been fixed first.

edward, as usual has done a great job, and considering sony's 'assistant' seems to be a hodge-podge collection of his, ultimate's, and veggie toolbox, he's taking it remarkably calmly ;-)

what isn't clear is why a new i/f colour, along with new layouts is worth anybodies money.

nor is it clear whether existing plugins work in 64bit - it's enough paying for an upgrade without having to purchase all your plugins again.

and while the addition of 4k, red, et al is very welcome, no mention is made of avchd. now, whether people consider it a 'consumer' format or not, it is widely used in cheap cameras, of which a number of my clients use as 'disposables' in otherwise hazardous situations (water / mines / inconspicuous)...

of course, the above may read a little biased - perhaps because i was expecting 8d to be released with fixes to many documented problems before 9.

still, may 11th should shut me up - i'll either be spending money on the upgrade, or curious to see if 9 makes it to a .b release before 10's release...

rmack350 wrote on 4/22/2009, 9:23 PM
This is just opinion, but I don't think the fact that VP9.0 is projected to release on or near the 11th precludes an 8.0d between now and then. If the work has been done on 9.0 then why not release an 8.0d with bugfixes and no new features? I think that'd be a smart move, probably best done the week before 9.0 releases because if there are good bugfixes it'll boost confidence in 9.0.

Some of the features listed for V9 are must-haves for some people. A real image sequence output is a big deal if that's what you need. Same with DPX. Same with GB image resolutions for those doing pan and scan.

It seems like you're picking some fairly insignificant new features and then pointing out the obvious - that those small things are not worth an upgrade on their own.

Edward mentions "updated Sony AVC rendering templates for internet distribution". I wonder if the actual codec (or the similar MainConcept AVC codec) are being updated too. It would be a disappointment if they are not, since the current ones have been well surpassed in terms of quality vs bitrate (x264, recent MainConcept etc.).

Vegas never included FLV export, which was a shame but less important to many users now as H.264 takes over for internet video. If they were to includ a state-of-the-art H.264 codec that would be a big plus.

Just got back from NAB. After reading through this, here's a few extra answers:

I've seen and heard a few questions regarding the new version that were not answered in the newsletter. Most of these came from the Sony "Vegas Pro 9 review" thread (I didn't bring my computer with me so I'm not logged in there).

At the end of E.Troxel´s newsletter he mentions a

I meant to test out the trial WHEN it's available. That should be May 11.

I tried to log into his web site - but says I've been BANNED!

No individual person has been banned. Some DOMAINS have been. This is all explained in a thread here: http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1413

A quick e-mail to me and I'll get you registered.

Note to Ed: It might be a good time to update the Vegas box artwork on your newsletter masthead.

It's sort of a legacy at this time. The newsletter started with version 4 and still shows the version 4 box.

Does this mean an unified exe-file that works either in 32 or 64 bit format - depending of your OS? Or does it mean two different installs?

It is TWO separate installs and both can be installed on the same machine. The 64-bit version needs 64-bit plugins so if you have 32-bit plugins, you'll need the 32-bit version to use them.

Hope this helps clarify some things.

Thanks for the review link saw the ...built-in option to export image sequences reference ...and that sold it for me plus the other goodies. Decided to go with the audio plugin in and the production assistant. This looks like a great upgrade. May 11th is going to be a fun day.

Cheers

Ed, can you elaborate on what has been done re AVCHD in V9? Have the codecs been updated? Can we expect crash and jitter-free renders with high-profile AVCHD?

Ed, do you offer your newsletter in HTML format? It was really informative and useful but I'd never heard of your newsletter before. I mocked one up if you'd like me to port them over to HTML for you.

http://madison.thewikies.com/jetdv/

I know I still like having things HTML accessible. If not, no worries and I'll pull it.
jetdv wrote on 5/2/2009, 6:42 AM
You missed the pictures!

Overall, no I have not considered going to an html format. Since PDF is so universal, I figured it was a really simple way to make them universally available without having to go through the trouble of mucking with HTML for each issue. Plus, they're extremely printable as the PDF is already formatted for proper printing/page breaks.

At this time, I don't have the original text/images going back 6 years which would make things more difficult. For this particular one that you converted, it has been submitted to DVInfo for posting there.

Glad you found them and hope you find MANY of them useful!

Edward, I am delighted to have found out from your newsletter about the improved export of image sequences! I've been wondering about that -- now why would Sony leave out such a juicy improvement in their announcements? And the 4 point envelope setting is a great improvement. That little detail always annoyed me and I never even thought of asking for an improvement -- I just took it as something one must always have to deal with. I have no problem with paying for such luxury items (including the darker GUI) which will affect me every day in small but pleasant ways. It's like a train with first and second class -- you pay extra for a more comfortable ride on the same train.

Hi Ed,

I did not add the pictures throughout the article because they were far too compressed, and this was only an example of porting your newsletter to an easily accessible HTML format. I would be happy to begin porting the others, but I would want the images to be clear. As I already said, I thought the newsletter was excellent, and those are just the purist concerns of a print and design enthusiast. Thanks again.
