Installing Noise Reduction Trial

i c e wrote on 3/5/2009, 12:46 PM
Hi,
I have a audio track with a lot of back round noise and wind that I am trying to salvage. I found the Sony Noise Reduction Software free and downloaded it to see if it might be what I need.
I got it installed and don't know where to find the application.
Can I access it from Vegas or Sound Forge or Cinescore?

I would really appreciate an help.

Thank you,

Joshua

The noise reduction plugin is available under the Direct-X audio filters in all application that support Direct-X. Unfortunately, random non-steady-state background noise and particularly wind noise are virtually impossible to remove with any audio tool.

yeah that's what I figured and after a day of trying to EQ out the noise with no sucsess I realize I probably won't be able to fix it.
But.... maybe I'll mess around with that Noise Redctiion. I am kind of a novice so you would mind telling me how to accsess that DirectX plug in in Vegas or Sound Forge?

I would really appreciate it,

Thank you,

Josh

In Sound Forge 9, mine is under the Tools menu.

From the Vegas help:

From the View menu, choose Plug-In Manager to toggle the display of the Plug-In Manager window.

You can use this window to access effects and effects packages that can be applied to events, tracks, and busses. This window also allows you to rename and reorganize plug-ins. For information about adding effects to your project, please see applying effects.

To add effects quickly, you can drag plug-ins and plug-in packages from the Plug-In Manager window to events, tracks, busses, and the Audio Plug-In, Video FX, or Video Preview windows.

I hope once Ice has figured out where the plugin lives he can find a good tutorial on how to use it. I started off at one of Spot's local courses and from that refined my technique somewhat. I've never seen any tutorials on how to use it to best effect and it's not a simple thing to grasp.

As said above though, many types of noise simply cannot be removed, CSI and the like have a lot to answer for :)

I just bought the NR2 plugin using the 35% discount. It works really well. I had a few clips with background hiss, and applied the plugin. The hiss is now totally gone! It's amazing! I would recommend buying this plugin especially with the 35% discount.

With the 35% discount, I see i can buy Sound Forge for $195 and it includes the NR2 plugin. Does this plugin have all the functionality of NR2 if I bought NR2 separately?

Yes, the Sony NR2 plugin is excellent. A couple of tips; to minimize artifacts, the NR2 plugin generally works best using "Mode 3" and for mildly noisy dialog and VO, I mostly use an FFT size around 2048.

I agree with Bob: a well written tutorial explaining all the features of NR would be of great help. I labor with it and bring forth only minimal results, not knowing precisely what I should be doing. I know from Spot's postings here that to use a very small sample is best, but I still manage to generate a lot of artifacts, especially when trying to remove background noise from air conditioning equipment without distorting voices.

Edit: Google "Sony noise reduction tutorial;" there's some excellent information there, for varying levels of experience.

The first one I found from Jeffrey P. Fisher is very good.
One thing I've found not metioned elsewhere is the length of the sample you need to capture needs to be adjusted to suite what you're trying to remove. Lower frequency noises need a longer sample period than higher frequency ones.

As Jeffrey says, after you've gotten rid of as much noise as possible then a noise gat can help. The one that ships with Vegas is pretty horrid. The Graphic Dynamics FX that comes with SF is much nicer if you spend some time tweaking it. I tend to dislike gates as they get overbaked and the sound of noises 'breathing' between words is distracting so I've find if I turn the gate down just below where I can notice it working gives the best result.

I figured I would share my all-time favorite noise reduction tool with you guys. Try out the trial and mess with some of the options. This has become my defacto tool for audio mastering my videos. If you guys have another preference, I'd love to hear about it too.

Yes, the Sony NR2 plugin is excellent.

How could this be true. The NR2 plugin sold separately sells for $279 .. Sound Forge 9 sells for $299 .. Are you telling me you get Sound Forge 9 for like $20 extra? .. Even less when you start tossing in the 35% disc now available. And WAIT .. THAT"S NOT ALL...

In addition to Sound Forge 9 software, this comprehensive audio production suite includes

I'm thinking this is a good deal. Do I have $200 to blow on audio?
