OT: My Youtube / Facebook Settings

Jonathan Neal wrote on 2/9/2009, 11:35 AM
Hi all,

I wanted to take this opportunity to share my MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4) export settings that I use in Sony Vegas 8 to create MP4 files best-fashioned for Fullscreen and Widescreen Youtube/Facebook upload and playback.

Also, I've included an experimental installer which may automatically add both of these templates to your machine. If you're interested, please let me know if it does or does not work for you.

Download the "Internet Fullscreen & Widescreen" templates installer here.

Project

Template: Internet Fullscreen (or Internet Widescreen)
Description:
2 Mbps VBR 640 x 480 (870 x 480 on Internet Widescreen)
192 Kbps CBR 44.1 Mhz

Use this setting to create an MP4 file best fashioned for Fullscreen Youtube/Facebook upload and playback.

Video Rendering Quality: Best

Video

Frame Size: (Custom frame size)
Width: 640 (870 on Internet Widescreen)
Height: 480
Allow source to adjust frame size: false
Allow source to adjust frame rate: true
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0000
Number of reference frames: 1
Use deblocking filter: true
Constant Bit Rate: false
Variable Bit Rate: true
Two-pass: true
Max: 10 Mbps (10,000,000)
Avg: 2 Mbps (2,000,000)

Audio

Sample rate: 44,100 Hz
Bit rate: 192,000 bps

Thanks all.

On MAX and AVG, I'm certain you meant Mbps and not Gbps. I don't know of anyone that has a 10 gigabit per second Internet connection into their home (yet.)

Yes, it was a typo. I forgot about the kilo, and it has been corrected. Thanks John.

We'll give it at try, thanks.

However, the number of reference frames always changes back to 2 when I exit that field. It won't ever stay at 1.

Jonathan, If you upload 720p (or higher, I guess) then YouTube now offer an HD option that looks great in full screen.

(EDIT: sorry that isn't a live link but doing that makes the video embed here, which I don't want)

I made that one by framserving to MeGUI and using the x264 codec at 5Mbps 2-pass VBR. Deinterlacing (TDeint) and resizing (Lanczos) to 720p in AVISynth on the way. I prefer x264 over the 2 Vegas H.264 codecs for final delivery but for sites that re-encode like YouTube and Facebook it doesn't really matter because you can just throw more bitrate at it. I would have sent YouTube a version even higher than 5Mbps but my internet connection sucks at the moment.

Saved the re-encded file from YouTube and analyzed it in AVInaptic and I see that they re-encoded my file to 2Mbps H.264 plus 125kbps AAC stereo audio.

I tried to upload the same file to Facebook but it just hung. Apparently they deliver 720p at 2.5Mbps encoded with x264 so it should be even clearer than the YouTube version. I will try again.

Nick,

That's great insight. I'm glad 2mb can be considered the safe average on the video. I'll keep the audio profile at 192 since Facebook's audio is probably higher quality too.

Also, for the MeGUI option you talked about , I'd like to make a FrameServer tutorial about this if you have some time to help.

Thanks for posting this! I downloaded the template and it works great, but the only problem I have is whenever there is movement in the video, horizontal lines appear on the object that's moving. Is this normal? Is there a way I can fix this? Thanks!

192kbps is probably a good idea using that codec. The Nero AAC codec offered in MeGUI is reputed to give really excellent quality at low bitrates. 64kbps seems to be a norm for actual delivery, and I think 128kbps would be enough for uploading to YouTube etc..

Happy to help. Send me a PM with any questions. If you're keen you may just want to dive in with MeGUI (via Debugmode Framserver and AVIsynth) and see how it goes. You might want to check out my old Vegas to YouTube tutorial which used Xvid in VirtualDub and letterboxed 16:9 video because otherwise YouTube would do it. This is before recent changes to YouTube quality and really needs updating.

Do you guys use the Studio RGB to Computer RGB filter on your footage before converting for uploading?

Thanks for posting the detailed settings. BTW, the Installer worked fine for me with V8.0C.

I ran into an anomaly and wonder if others have seen this. I posted a video that had a number of clips from a number of sources. The source material was all over the place in terms of color correction (CC). For each of the clips I adjusted them to make it less annoying and when I render for DVD Architect it is fine. When I rendered to MP4 using these settings those clips that had to be radically changed are OK until the last frame or two where the CC either stops taking effect or maybe there is a slight sync shift between the CC and the video it is supposed to correct. I first noticed it on the You Tube update but when I checked the the MP4 it was there also. The video can be seen at " and one example of this is at 1:04 but is right at the end of many scenes where the CC was making a major correction.

My guess is an errant keyframe at the end of your CC clip(s).

A couple of my HD videos on YouTube show a green screen as the first frame which is not at all in my original stuff.
I'm advising my viewers to click on the HD version and then hit the pause button and wait till it buffers completely so it will play smoothly without stopping.
Its when I set the play button to the very beginning that I see this weird solid green frame that seems to have arrived out of cyberspace....I sure didnt put it there!
Wonder if you are getting some of these anomolies too and it has nothing to do with your source material.

I've checked frame by frame in Vegas 8C and there doesn't seem to be any issue there. The problem is in the rendered MP4. Also tried rendereing to a WMV and less of a problem, but still there in some places. NO problem when rendered to separate audio/video files for DVD Architect.

Seems to be something weird in the rendering.

@ plasmavideo

Sometimes I'll add some color correction to a video I'll post on youtube but only if that particular video is less than 3 minutes long. I'm stuck with a mediocre DSL service until we move so my upload speeds are pretty dismal. Adding color correction increases the file size overall which for me can add even more time during the upload process.

I installed the templates your created, which worked fine, and used to render two simple training videos I created for a local volunteer effort. A number of people have had no problem with them, but several people have reported that they hear no audio. I imagined they were only looking at the master volume slider in windows and got some to check all the sliders. . .

But here is the weirdest thing, I asked these people to see if they can play other You Tube videos and hear the audio. They tried it and they CAN. OK, I understood that You Tube convert all submitted videos to their format, so this really has me scratching my head.

Here's a link to one of the videos:
Part 1 - Reading Aloud Tutorial (Running time 2:47):

Any help appreciated. I searched via Google and on You Tube and haven't seen this reported elsewhere.

I get the same thing on my videos when I try to watch in HD. Shot with Canon HV30 rendered as Sony AVC mp4 Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, Stereo, AAC.
Video: 5,000,000 bps, 29.970 fps, 1280x720, Best, Progressive

I see it on some other as well. It just happened on Nicks video that I just watched right after I click HD. It never happens when I watch YT videos that are under YT's HD tab. However, if I click HD and click my keyboard left arrow it starts the video at the beginning with no green frames? Maybe it's my internet connection or something to do with the YT player? Maybe I need some pre roll at the beginning of the clip? BTW Nick, great videos, awesome.
