OT - Hard Drive going bad

TomG wrote on 1/23/2009, 6:31 AM
I am suddenly receiving a message during bootup which states:

IDE channel 5 Master Hard Drive S.M.A.R.T status bad

I have 4 SATA drives onboard. For the life of me I cannot tell which drive this message refers to. I guess I could start unplugging them one at a time to see which one is going bad, but is there a utility or system tool which reports on which drive is associated with IDE channel 5?

Appreciate any help.

Boot into the Bios. Should tell you there or if SATA drives are plugged into your motherboard, check motherboard manual for layout.

Thanks xberk

BIOS reports all drives are, in fact, plugged into the motherboard. I'm just trying to find out which drive is assigned to channel 5 which, I assume, is the drive that is going bad. Would this be found in the motherboard manual?

TomG,

The BIOS treats the IDE channels before the SATA channels. If it's reporting an error with Channel 5, it should be your third SATA channel that you should check the drive on.

Do you have two IDE channels? If so, Primary would be channel 1, secondary would be channel 2, then it goes to your SATA. Some boards list SATA channels starting with '0', sometimes with '1'. Check your board, it will be printed by the SATA connector. If your board labels them with SATA '0', then SATA 0 would = channel 3, SATA 1 would = channel 4, and SATA 2 would = channel 5, which would probably be your culprit.

Hope that helps

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management(Local) - That will give you a listing of all installed disks in order, with a lot of other info about your setup.

There are also shareware programs that will tell you not just about the SMART status, but also to which drive the issue pertains.

Thanks everyone

I have two Western Digitals, one Maxtor, and one Seagate. I just purchased the Seagate and and got the had the Disc Utilities CD with it. These utilities really helped and reported that the Maxtor failed all tests.

Good to know since I still have time to get my data off that dirve.
