clicks in recorded files

I'm getting clicks that sound like static snaps in tracks that I record. It begins with the first track, then
gets worse as more tracks are recorded and played back while recording another. It sounds as if my PC
isn't keeping up for some reason. Here's what I have:

Win98ME
VV2.0b
PIII700MHz
384Megs RAM
Maxtor 20Gb 7200RPM HDD for apps
Maxtor 27Gb 7200RPM HDD for audio
Matrox G400 dual head 32Mb video
Direct-X 7.0

All drivers are updated. Windows settings are all set at the default. I'm thinking of switching to
Win98SE. WinME seemed pretty buggy when I installed it. I didn't get these 'snaps' when trying
VV2.0a or earlier versions....but I was also running under Win98 first edition.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi Jim,

What kind of sound card are you using? Is the sound card
possibly sharing an IRQ with another device in your system?

Also, have you tried removing VV2.0b and going back to
VV2.0a to see if you can eliminate this as being a hardware
problem?

Best,
Scott
