The digidesign driver is exclusive so it can only power one program at a time. I was wanting to have HD running simultaneously with Acid so I could compose on acid and then import into protools as needed. (I know pro tools will do the same thing as acid, but I personally find the acid interface much easier to navigate for building loops) If I purchased an inexpensive sound card, would acid be able to run parallel with pro tools hd?

thanks in advance for your help

Not to take you off topic, but why wouldn't you just finish the project off in Acid? It's a pretty powerful DAW in its own right.

I have an hd 5 rig with many of the TDM plug-ins and often have large track counts. Sometimes I will have 20 or so (or more) tracks that will each have some fairly powerful dynamics and/or eq and/or reverbs, and the DSP power on the accel cards give me a great deal of control and power, without having to worry about any latency or processing power ceiling issues at all. I think it is still the case for the time being that when it comes to plug-in availability, control, and handling a pro-tools hd system can't be beat. And it is true that some plug-in makers are moving away from or are avoiding the TDM format, but at this time I still believe the Native environment is a ways away in terms of high end mixing and mastering plug-ins from the power one gets out of an hd system. The UAD cards are a good example - they host outstanding plug-ins, but they are so space hungry you have to have an extra card to run them because they would tax the cpu and memory of the system too much to be practical. So I generally compose in acid, and then when it is time to do the high quality production mixing and pre-mastering I go into pro-tools, and back and forth along the way to get me where I'm going. In ab-ing the results, I always find that the sound I can get out of my pro-tools mixing is better in terms of clarity and depth and overall feel. Although acid does not get bad final results at all and I use it constantly, the mixing and mastering control options are more limited for me. Then again, I'm a 'gearslut plug-in junkie'.....

ReWire PT+Acid 7 you can even use TDM & RTAS plugins on Acid busses.

I replied:
Powerful? Maybe. Clunky to use? Definitely. For serious daw work I'll stick with Sonar 8, thank you. I can do what I need to do in Sonar in half the time and far easier than in Acid 6. S8 runs happily on my computer whereas AP7 will not, and even AP6 is dodgy.

To the original poster:
I see no reason you couldn't run a separate audio card for Acid. You might have to use ASIO4all drivers, though.

PS (and ot):
As evidenced above, when one wants to quote a relevant part of a previous post you have to do a copy and paste - there is no quote function on this forum. Why? Every other forum I participate in has a quote function - why not this one?
