VASST Notepad avaialble as Freeware for Vegas Pro

JohnnyRoy wrote on 7/19/2008, 8:04 PM
I just in case some of you might not have followed the "What would really be great is...." thread, I wanted to make Vegas Pro users aware that a new Vegas Command Extension called VASST Notepad is available for FREE. It is part of our VASST Freeware collection.

As the name implies, Notepad is a place where you can maintain notes about your project. These notes can be saved in the project file or as a separate RTF document along side the project file. Because Notepad is a Vegas Command Extension, it is a dockable window that can be placed in the dock alongside the other Vegas tabbed windows. It can remain always open in Vegas Pro and will auto-load your notes with your projects.

VASST Notepad requires: Vegas Pro 8.0b or later.

Enjoy,

~jr

Thanks much!

Is the value of this item the fact that it can be docked in the tabbed section and thus easily accessed? The reason for my question is because one can currently write notes in the Project Properties / Summary section, right?

Also, maybe a dumb question, but any chance this tool could work on V7d? Or could it be modified to do so?

Superb! Great work Johnny - THANK YOU!

* The "Insert Marker Position" - BOSH!! Done! Makes this tool quick and valuable to use

* Now with the "Right Click Menu" included it works as part of my workflow.

Thanks again,

Grazie

Thanks Johnny - it's almost perfect now (actually, it's perfect; I used the word "almost" because I suspect you will make it even better, anyway - perhaps selectable font colours? :))

Just like to add my thanks to Johnny, already a legend, now even more so!

- not totally off subject, but aside from Vegas, how many "rival" NLEs have scripting, and now Command Extensions ? The way and the speed with which Johnny responded to the "What would be great ..." post was great to witness.

Totally correct Peter.

Plus, having John as part of this forum and his enthusiasm for video editing, music and his deep understanding of the Vegas platform is a real boon for all of us. I wouldn't think John would be so "can-do" if Vegas didn't allow for it. - Well, he couldn't be! So we ALL win:

* SONY gets input and allows us to get what we want. Would this have happened, with the same rapidity that John exhibited if SONY had had to do it? SONY must love this happening. Users getting what they want through the exploits and endeavors of other Users.

* We have the likes of John, and Edward and John Meyer and Rosebud (Gilles) and .. . apologies for missing out the names from the role call . . . who can envisage and turn our wishes and HAVE the ability to convert these ideas through programming into valuable workflow opportunities.

Thank you Johnny !
It’s a very nice custom command.

Just a suggestion for future version:
I believe you used the new "CustomDataContainer" class to write this custom command.
I think it would be great to have the ability to add note not only to the project but also for events (and maybe for tracks ?). When we select an event or a track their related note would be automatically displayed in the text box.

Gilles? Would it be possible to click on a previously inserted marker WITHIN VASST Notepad and have that position jumped-to by the Timeline Cursor? - I know you have the GoTo, maybe some link between JRs and yours?

What d'yer think? - It make navigation FROM the VASST NB very slick?

Thanks Johnny!

It's already done a great job at cleaning some of the sticky notes that were scattered all over my work station! I can now put a coffee cup down on an actual hard desk top surface!
JohnnyRoy wrote on 7/20/2008, 9:14 AM
I'm glad people are finding it useful. This came out of a request from blink3times that fell into the "simple yet useful" category hence the thread "What would really be great is....". I thought, why not create it as a Command Extension and thus Notepad was born. Then the idea was further fed by people like rmack350, farss, Grazie and others and before you know it, there is a ground swell of people who love the idea of having a notepad inside of Vegas. Who knew? But that's what makes really great tools... tools that are born to solve a real world problems and so people can immediately relate to it and "get it".

The same thing happened with VASST Trackalizer (another Freeware script). Someone needed to export all their audio tracks to load into ProTools or some other DAW and Trackalizer was born. Then as people used it they requested little tweaks here and there and now it's a pretty handy tool for exporting audio from Vegas to other DAW's.

The real genius here goes to the team at Sony Creative Software for having the foresight to create the Script API and Command Extension API. It has empowered us as editors to inspire 3rd party developers like myself, Edward, Gilles, etc. to solve those simple yet pesky workflow issues that affect all of us.

I don't believe any other NLE has this power. This is one of the reasons I love Vegas.

Thanks again for all the kind words.

No doubt, this is AWESOME!

I just received my FullHD book from VASST, I can already see that this is a first class operation...I'm sure I'm not saying anything that isn't already well known by the people here.

Thanks again, Johnny, this is one great tool.

Which if any of the free Vaast tools are not in Ultimate S already?

Trackalizer and Notepad are the only two. All the others are in Ultimate S Pro.

I've been opening a Wordpad file and sizing it into an external monitor. This is so much better to have it open automatically when reopening a project. Simple things make such a difference sometimes! Thanks!

You could always use the built-in cup holder that came with your desktop...

Dear Johnny,

Any chances of getting your great free tool (the VASST Notepad, one of the most useful freeware to work in Vegas) work with the 8.1 (64bit) version?

With the project I'm working on currently, it's indispensable to have a notepad in (a couple instances of) Vegas; frankly this is the only reason I'm doing it in the 9.0c rather than the 8.1!

Please Johnny, tell us when? Excalibur works with the 8.1, just as SOME VASST utilities; (not Ultimate S, though) - why can't the Nootepad? TIA,

Piotr
