Wish list for Vegas 9

eyeshow wrote on 9/27/2008, 5:07 PM
Great product here! I have a couple of suggestions if anyone is interested (all audio features):

1. Fix plug-in stability issues!!
2. A complete "session template" copy for tracks, busses, track fx, insert fx, etc.
3. Terminology of track fx = insert fx, and insert fx = send/return fx (which is what they really are) to reduce standard terminology confusion
4. Routing improvements: Have true routing/sub-grouping where the current "busses" and tracks have INPUT and output settings(hardware or virtual)!! Not just output.
5. Have a "lock BUSS envelopes to events" similar to the current "lock envelope to events" in tracks
6. The ability to consolidate sliced events into one event
7. A setting to toggle on/off the red offset box that was in Vegas 7 (please bring this back!)

Wishlist for a "Super Sony Audio Suite"

1. The integration of Acid and Vegas to create a product better than the audio standard software that already VASTLY pales in comparsion to Vegas as far as audio editing goes today! I won't mention any names but the initials are PT... This would include all the audio/video features of Vegas, and the sync-timing and MIDI/VSTi/ReWire capabilities of Acid. Ohhhh I only dream of the day that would be awesome.

Thanks!!!

- FOLDER TRACKS !
- Project exchange with Acid, and vice-versa (obviously audio content
only)
- Direct Protools project file format import/export.

Here we go again:
- Save as BWF (Broadcast Wave File with TC stamp)
- OMF file support (and/or Avid/Protools session file import/export.
- Lock event to timeline (without locking other functions)
- Hide tracks.
- Side chain process'
- Audio event process. (Example: EQ audio event, not entire track )
- Folder tracks
- Read TC on audio track.

I seriously doubt we'll see any of these. I would not be surprised if ALL audio functions were removed in the next version.
Chienworks wrote on 10/3/2008, 6:11 PM
*All* audio functions? Surely you jest. (i know, i know, don't call you Shirley.) Who would use a video editing program that could only work with silent clips and produced output with no audio? That will kill Vegas dead in an instant.

For that matter, why would they remove any audio functions at all? I suppose it's bizarrely possibly that Sony might decide not to spend any more effort adding new audio features to Vegas, but once they're already in there, it would be ridiculous to pull them out.

Hi Chien, Rick here,
Just ranting out of frustration. Surely I was not that serious...and don't call me Shirley.

Don't you agree Vegas (AND SF) should have the ability to save BWFs? A standard format in audio for video/film acquisition, editing and layback.

default folder for "render to new file" (aka alt-m) should be the project folder.

Yep that's me! Wow, you remember that?! I did the music (in Vegas)- and hooked up with the singer after that.

You sent me a CD years ago through AMT. Great stuff! Have you recorded anything else lately?

wow - rraud - I want all of these as well.

Why on EARTH Sony went with AAF support instead of OMF support is retarded beyond belief. No one uses AAF and even though Digidesign supports it, they barely know what it is.

side chaining? Yeah, what the hell is this doing missing from a Pro Audio app for Post Prooduction?

Lock Event to Timeline while still being able to perform other actions on it. YES!!!

I'd like a SMPTE VST plugin to generate time code. A time code reader would be nice too.

Audio Event process : again, YES! I want to be able to "bake" the track plugins into an event (or the gain changes, fades, etc.) if I want, or better yet, have event effects.

Hide Tracks!!!!!!

I'll post my bigger list down below.
CDM wrote on 10/9/2008, 2:11 PM
what I consider MAJOR ITEMS:

- mono vs. stereo. We should be able to have mono tracks and busses.

- ASIO implementation is terrible. Recording is very unstable and needs to be overhauled.

- Rendering engine. The ability to render tracks and busses individually.

- Event effects, or at least the ability to "cook" an event's properties into a new take and file and remove what was there.

- Better pitch shift and time compress/expand

- total overhaul of how automation envelopes are dealt with. Should be much easier way to toggle between them (on, off, some, none, all - with a easy hot key)

- personally, I've never liked the way events record. I think there should be an "overwrite" record mode that acts more like Pro Tools. The fact that when you record into an event and reach the end and it doesn't continue to extend the event as it records has always bothered me. It's fantastic when it comes to punching, but in many other cases it's very NON-intuitive, particularly for the Pro Tools folks.

- OMF support, or a much more sensitive approach to cross platform compatilbility.

- consolidate events!!!!!!! A way to comp takes. This is a ridiculously overlooked feature.

- Input busses

- better detection of video editing vs. audio editing so you can't edit video events that aren't on a frame boundary

- Hide Tracks

- Track Freeze

- Console groups and mix states

- Project Templates!!

- Faster audio proxy rendering or LIVE embedded projects

WORKFLOW:

- Strip Silence

- event markers, so you can drop markers in an event while recording or during playback, so you don't have a million timeline based markers that might represent per track items

- add takes across tracks right-click option

- have a horizontal snap point for envelope points so that if you're trying to match the value of a previous or following point, you can just drag up and down until it "snaps"

- rename files in the Project Media without renaming the extension.

- a way to right-click on a piece of offline media in the Project Media and rightclick to Find Offline Media.

- Frame Offset for Windows Secondary Display

- when you indicate a time-stretched event, it makes no sense to say 105% when you compress it 5%. It should say 5%.

- change the recorded file names so it's just the track header name and _01.wav etc.

- Make the default typing field in the search dialog the keyword field so you can start typing right away instead of having to click there with the mouse first

- “sections behavior” when moving or copying events on timeline with regards to envelope points. Should act the way it does in Acid

- Plugin manager changes

- Change audio device on the toolbar

- Lock track height

- Eraser tool

- Drag and drop effect chains on track headers and from the console. As well as individual effects.

- make edits on compressed files and re-save without recompressing

- save and copy feature but have it create subfolders which includes the media that's in the sub-bins

- dragging from the MM would ask if you want to copy the file to the project directory

- I don't like the way the event starts to "fill in" when recording long takes.

Charles it's all already there; it's called REAPER. Justin picked up and ran with the baton that Sony sadly dropped long, long ago now.

I don't think I'm being pessimistic when I say that the development of a feature set like you outline, at this stage in Vegas' life and given its history, is fairly unlikely to say the least. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see it happen. I just really don't think it will.

sad to say I agree with you, Ben.

Instead of just open in audio editor and open copy in audio editor, provide choices among audio editors. I have three that I use routinely.
Cakewalk lets me do this. Sure would be nice if Vegas would, too.

1) Track height needs to be more adjustable
2) Audio device window access from toolbar

I didn't see many requests about the mixing console window. When I show this window to the people I play and record with.... they really perk up with interest. It's noticable on their faces... they "get it". Some more work and promotion with the mixing console feature is bound to help sales. May be a bell and whistle item but it draws interest from novices. May be useless to those with hardware mixers... still wishing for that Mackie Universal Pro ...It still amazes me that Sony won't come out with a hardware mixer for Vegas.

More adjustable how?

2) Audio device window access from toolbar

What do you mean by audio device window? The audio device preferences page? Why do you need to access this often?

What do you believe the Mix Console needs?

Wrong division. We write software, we don't have a hardware group here. I don't know of a division in Sony that makes mixers any longer.

Didn't once-upon-a-time there used to be 3 toggle options for track height ? That was handy.

Of course 'folder tracks' also help to tidy up screen space and organise projects ;-)

Hardware controller - of course the Mackie is supported, as is my BCF2000 as an emulated Mackie....

Oh Man... wish lists...

I remember back with the start of Vegas 5 that I had been asking for

1) OMF support
2) BWF WRITEABILITY-- WE NEED THAT SOOOOO BAD!!!
3) HUI support
4) Something similar to the protools "audio suite" that allows you to apply as a new
take the same set of fx quickly to clips
5) Better TC support

VSTs are finally working a little better in 8. The Snapping with vegas 7 is absolutely amazing--- showing once again the UI is why I still use Vegas for audio... but god I wish that I didn't have to keep on using outside programs to do what Vegas should be able to do within itself...

Tell you the truth, I used to be very active in these forums but have gotten so frustrated as months have run into years and still we have no

BWF WRITING
OMF IMPORTING

Everything else would be really nice, but just icing on the cake. BWF and OMF are so basically necessary to function in post that I am very sad ..
rraud wrote on 10/22/2008, 3:47 PM
Same here cchoy, I was also asking for OMF & BFW saving since V5. I was in contact with SCS about BWF just before V8 came out, but was so disappointed, I bought Sonar. Still use Vegas a lot though. I had been using Cui Bono-Soft EDL convert for OMFs, but now SSL wants about $700 for it. It was $250 when Cui Bono-Soft owned it.
Baagoo wrote on 10/26/2008, 1:46 PM
1) Track height adjustability: I'll remove this wish due to my ignorance of not knowing to expand the Track Header to the right. All the features are now shown at minimum track height...

2) Audio Device window access from toolbar: We record and listen to playback in the same room. I use this (preference page) to switch the monitors on and off (ASIO to wave driver). True, I could walk across the room and turn off the monitor amp but it's easier to just switch using the Audio device prefence window. Not a biggie, just a wish.

Mixing Console: Pretty much just wanted to give you folks a "heads up" that people who wouldn't normally have much interest in using Vegas really perk up when I show them the Mixing Console. I also enjoy using it for the mixing phase of projects.1 thing I can think of that might make the Mixing Console ( and default view) easier is a way to lock down the mouse left click when using the "Automation" mode on volume and panning envelopes. Maybe this is already available?

I do realize the accountability problems within different divisions of the same empire. But, isn't there a software-hardware collaberation with the gaming console? Personally, I would rather give Sony $1300 in the hopes to help fund advancement of the entire product than give it to some other company that has no stake in Vegas's future.

Overall, I really like Vegas, it allows even me, with limited equipment and capabilities to produce with remarkable results.

I don't follow you on this. What do you want to do with the mouse?

What do you want? Vegas for PS3?

Under Automation controls, drawing envelope points (pg 166 in Vegas 8 PDF manual). In default view I need to hold Shift key, Left click and drag when drawing volume, pan and fx envelopes. In the Mixing Console window I don't need to hold the shift key down (Thanks!)... I just click to highlight the"touch" button, then left click on the fader-pan controls and drag to create the desired envelope. When I pan a lead guitar around thoughout a 4-5min song, well holding the left click down for that long gets a little tiring. If there was a way to lock the left click down without pressing on it all I would need to do is drag the mouse to draw the envelopes. Again, not a biggie, just a wish.
pwppch wrote on 10/27/2008, 4:44 PM
You can do the same thing on the time line. There is no need to hold down the shift key.

The shift key is a modifier to allow you to draw envelope data instead of inserting points or moving envelope points. It is not tied to the state of the track or busses automation record mode/state.

Audio specific requests
1 Apply non-real time FX across multiple events on the time line - specifically audio FX such as noise reduction plug ins like WAVES Z-Noise, which is useless as a real time plug in because of it's inherent delay.
2. OMF Import and Export (as has been requested for years) - even Soundtrack Pro on a Mac does this out of the box
3. Merge two mono tracks into one stereo with volume envelopes. (as can ProTools) If we get OMF import this is going to be absolutely necessary as stereo tracks in OMFs are split into .L and .R mono tracks.
4. BWF write with embedded metadata
5. Trim mode in automation. Allowing + or - trimming of existing automation data.

These would be my must haves to stop me wandering back to ProTools when I get a serious audio project.

6. Pre-renders on video that stick with their time line events even when moved in the timeline. e.g. when a sequence is moved in the timeline due to editing at another point. Similarly when anew track is added with events in just a portion of the edit I don't want to lose all of my prerenders for the whole edit.

7. MIDI integration a la ACID but I guess that would detract from the ACID product line sales.

This option somehow got lost post V6.
The documentation for V8 still says it's there. Support simply don't understand.
When you've got a pile of CDs with 50 tracks each that option can save a lot of mouse clicking.
Thanfully I've got V6 to get this done.

Bob.
