OT: It appears that the Skydive Photo won!

Here is the link to the USA today photo contest. Spot is one of the Skydivers in Photo 5. It's clearly the best photo of the group and Scotty Burns of Clearwater, Florida (the photographer) appears to have won.

This is the story behind the photo.

Remarkable feat by Spot and the others. Captured in time by Scotty Burns, Photographer.

Thanks to all who supported the photo and the skydivers like Spot who made the jump.

he got my vote,, by the way i ain't no csi photo expert but that eagle with the fish........

I looked at all the photos and thought they were all good (but have to agree with winrock on that eagle).
If I didn't even know Douglas I would have voted for his.
I think the reason it's not #1 (by a long shot) is because a lot of voters don't realize (didn't read the caption at the bottom) there is a shuttle launch going on in the background.
It is a beautiful shot but just think about the logistics that had to go into that!!!
Very impressive!

Whoever took the Eagle shot may be doing the same thing we are. Let's give them a run for their money.

agreed...especially since the eagle would have been my last choice.

My wife just agreed with me and gave her vote for Dr Spot also....I'll see what my kids opinion are when they wake up :)

Let's bump this post up to the top again. Apparently you can vote once a day by the way according to the other thread.

If that's what the "Eagle and Fish" people are doing then so will we.

I voted because it is clearly the best photo. Scott leads the Bald Eagle now 35% to 32%. BTW, if you live or sail around places where there is an abundance of Bald Eagles, that picture isn't that hard to take any day of the week.

Voting aside, i can't believe how boring skydiving really is once you try it. I made one tandem jump from 15,000 feet and it was it -- never again am i spending the money for such boredom.

You may have done a tandem from 13,500, or maybe even 14k if you're at sea level, but tandems *are* boring if you have a crappy tandem instructor. Can't imagine anyone getting a thrill out of being laminated to another person more than once.
Skydiving itself being boring....Hmmm.....having climbed some pretty serious mountains, scuba, motorcycle racing, rodeo, paragliding, and a host of other "activities..." I've yet to find anything that offers the same excitement and personal satisfaction. But...some folks like broccoli, others like blondes. I'm a fan of neither.

Thanks to everyone who is supporting the photo. Putting together a jump timed correctly with the space shuttle was incredibly difficult. Flying in a formation that allowed the photo to be properly taken was just another hoop. I'm actually glad the guy in the purple wingsuit was in the wrong place, it made the photo come together better.

Well, what people don't realize is that up there when you fall it fells nothing like in your dreams where your whole body can experience the process of falling and you see the earth approaching. You just hang up there with earth too far to notice it getting closer and the only thing your body experiences is a huge amount of air coming into your mouth... disappointing like hell. With you constantly asking yourself, "that's it?"

Patryk would probably prefer to sit on a couch and play video games.
Patryk Rebisz wrote on 9/6/2008, 7:28 PM
in all honesty it it more exciting then the physically falling out if the plane and just hanging there.

I can't imagine anyone saying that
Jumping out of an airplane would be thrilling for me on the 1000th time (even in my dreams teathered to a big fat ugly guy)

Patryk, judging skydiving by what was obviously a very bad jump for you, is like judging every film by any National Lampoon movie.
You clearly didn't "get it." Air doesn't rush into your mouth, BTW.
C'mon out to Utah sometime, I'll take you on a great skydive on my nickel. If you don't have a huge grin, seriously accelerated heartrate, and intense emotional response, I'll be stunned.
It's all about the person that gives you your first experience. And for what it's worth, if you felt you were "falling" then you had a REALLY sh***ty instructor. We don't fall. We fly.
Randy Brown wrote on 9/6/2008, 7:39 PM
ummmm, I meant I also had a crappy, boring, skydiving experience...can I get a free ride too???!!!
TheHappyFriar wrote on 9/6/2008, 7:43 PM
gotta say, for me it was between the skydiving pic & the woman splashing. Nice picture of the water. But, honestly, I could get my kids in a kiddy poll & get the same effect if I tried. Infact, all those pics, minus the skydiving with the shuttle in the background, are really anything I haven't seen a dozen times before. Most in National Geographic shows or films, all the time.

Would of been awesome if you got a video of the skydive+launch. And I voted for yours because of those reasons, not because it's you. It's an AWESOME PICTURE. :)

Since there was no photo of a blonde eating broccoli, I voted for you, Spot.
VidMus wrote on 9/6/2008, 9:59 PM
My top choices were,

1 = Overlook
2 = Eagle
3 = Climber
4 = Skydive

While I appreciate very much all that Spot has done for us, I have to vote the way I feel and the way I feel is that 'Overlook' is by far the best picture. Eagle is an extremely close second. Climber is a close third and skydive is a distant fourth. And so I voted for 'Overlook'.

And that is the way I honestly see it.

Danny of vidmus - You are perfectly entitled to feel that way but you might at least have abstained as a gesture of support to "our" Spot who has done so much to help so many of us over the years.

Another vote for Spot, great shot. The boredom of skydiving was doubled by doing it while the Shuttle was going into orbit. What do you do for FUN anyway??

:)
DGates wrote on 9/7/2008, 5:46 AM
Looks like it's essentially a 3-way tie with Spot's pic and two others. Stupid eagle catches a fish and people go ga-ga.

Got my vote also. I love it. :o)
PS Sure hope you win Spot!
