Installing 8.1 on XP PRO 64 bit

Bluespoet wrote on 9/12/2008, 5:33 PM
I have tried installing Sony Vegas V8.1 on my homebuilt AMD dual core system
I am trying to install over V8.C.
I get this msg everytime I try

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or it the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed, Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Others have had success installing 8.1 on xp pro 64 any suggestions:

I installed 8.1 on my XP64 system and had no problems - and it installed separate from 8.0 - not over it.

I'm having the same problem installing on Vista 64.
It's something to do with Windows Installer.
The Vegas installation is trying to use Windows Installer, but seems
like it is not there. I know mine is as I installed 8.0C with no problem and
have had no install or uninstall issues with other software.

One thing you can try (didn't work in my case)
1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.
2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

If this doesn't work:
1. Go to "Start" -> "Run" , type "services.msc" and press on "Enter" button.
2. Double-click on the service named "Windows Installer".
3. Check the value in the "Startup type:" field. If it's currently set to "Disabled", then this is the problem. Change it by selecting "Manual" from the drop-down box.

All of the above did nothing for me.
I"ve got a message into Sony Tech support.
If no luck, you should do the same.
Nice to know, I'm not alone --- but most everyone else is doing fine.
Let me know how it comes out.

I tried the all the things Xbert mentioned, of course being male tried the last things first, but the first thing he mentioned

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.
2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

I have no idea what this did, but 8.1 is now installed on my computer, thank you very much for the suggestions

Great that you got 8.1 running.
But get this from Sony Knowledgebase post --

We only support Vegas Pro 8.1 (64-bit) on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. While it's possible the software will install and function on Windows XP x64 operating systems, we do not guarantee performance or reliability.

I'm running VIsta64 and I can't get 8.1 past the Windows Installer. Getting that lovely error 1709.

Mine went in no problem. There was a menu that you had to enter a valid serial number of any Sony application you own and then register same before it would open. Also during the install it installs a 64 bit Microsoft something or other.

Yes. It installs the Microsoft VIsual C++ redistributable 64 bit.
Won't run without it. The first time I tried to install 8.1 I got that far.
It installed the C++ -- then it bombed on Windows Installer and I"ve
been stuck there ever since.

So are you saying that the 8.1 install routine left the 8.0 version on there, and now in x64 you can access either the original 8.0 version or the new 8.1 version? Thanks.
