Not without upgrading to Vegas Pro 8.0. That's the first version that has smart rendering of MPEG. (maybe 7 did, but I forget).

You might want to check out Womble MPEG Video Wizard. It edits MPEG (cuts only) without re-rendering.

might not help now, but it's a LOT faster to go from a DV/uncompressed AVI to mpeg. I always render to new track, THEN render to mpeg. Then if I need to re-render a small section (ie a credit, a cut, etc) I can cut that out of the new track. Renders much faster.

Vegas 8 is the only version of Vegas that does it, and only under certain circumstances (i.e., not all MPEG-2 will be edited without re-rendering in a cuts-only project). Womble is the tried-and-true way to do this, but you will have to spend a little money. There is another program as well (can't remember the name) which is designed for editing out commercials in MPEG-2 captured off the air. It can also do the job.

It is worth the money to get Womble, because if you are like me, there are tons of projects where you want to take the VOB from a DVD you've already created and re-use parts of it without trying to find the original footage.

If you check these boards under my user name, you will find a workflow for how you can use Vegas (any version) to edit the MPEG-2 file, save the text EDL version of your project, and then use a little free utility to convert that into a Womble file. Thus, you can use your favorite editor (Vegas) to edit, but actually do the lossless cuts in Womble.

Womble has fades/wipes/filters etc (all with smart-rendering) - it's not just restricted to 'cuts only' editing.

VideoRedo is probably the app you are thinking about (it's very good too, but is cuts-only)
