Capture causes blue screen of death xp64

I switched from Vista 64 to XP pro 64 so I could use my ext snd card which had no drivers for Vista. Recently I went to all factory default settings because of another problem now solved.
Vegas Pro 8 recognizes my Canon HV20, but when I hit the capture button the blue screen of death appears for a fraction of a second so fast I cannot read it and re-boots my computer.
I am more than a bit frustrated, I should say I am trying to capture MT2 files and have HDV-Nero installed

How is the camera connected? 1394?
How is the external sound card connected? Also 1394?

Do you need the sound card connected while you capture? Maybe removing it will help if both devices are on 1394.

I have an HV20 as well and found that the cam can be touchy to capture from with more than just Vegas. I use HDVsplit (free download, google for it) to capture and then import to Vegas. If you do use HDVsplit, I have had better success by capturing the ENTIRE tape without scene split, and then use the accompanied scene split routine to scene split AFTER the capture. Also, HDVsplit has a "synchronize audio/video" switch... leave it OFF.
