Subject:WaveHammer broken in 9.0d?
Posted by: JasonVO

After upgrading to 9.0d, everything I process with WaveHammer gets random "beeps" and other noises placed throughout the file. It happens every time, but the placement is random. It has happened with every file I process with WaveHammer, including the voiceover.pca sample file that comes with Sound Forge. It seems to happen regardless of the WaveHammer settings, and even happens with the 'Voice' preset.

Steps to repro:
1) Open voiceover.pca
2) Open WaveHammer and select the Voice preset.
3) You should hear periods of noise during preview and after you commit the changes.

This was all working great in 9.0a-9.0c.

Sorry, Jason. I can't repro - I followed your steps exactly. WH sounds clear as a bell. Pre- and post-commit.

Sounds like your wavehammer has revered to "demo" mode

Jason:

I have experienced the same problem as you describe. You're not alone.

My "workaround" is to not use Wavehammer and instead use Dynamics and do it that way. Hopefully someone at Sony will take note of these recent bugs and make some corrections. I've been using Sound Forge for years and have had very little problems with it. Same with Vegas and DVD Architect.

Hope I was some help to you until Sony takes some action. Take care and stay safe.

Thanks Fred. for some reason I feel like Sony is just going to ignore this issue. Looking through the knowledge base, it says to get wavehammer out of demo is to download, i think it was SF5. Really outdated info.

We are trying to reproduce the problem. It would be helpful if you could tell us if any other SCS products are installed and whether you un-installed 9.0c prior to installing 9.0d.

In the meantime, tech support should be able to help you resolve this issue.

It would be helpful if you could tell us...

Same problem here. Has never happened to me until now. I tried WaveHammer and Acoustic Mirror. Both were in demo mode, so I gave up and used the restore point I had created.

I learned a long time ago to let programs install wherever they want to. I did that this time.
As always, I installed the 9.0d on top of the previous version (9.0c), which the installer saw.

The computer also has Vegas 8.0b installed, plus the most recent versions of CDA and DVDA.

Thank you for providing a bit of additional info on this.

I was wondering if I could get some further info as well.

For the people that are having the demo mode problem:

What OS are you guys running on? I tried checking the profiles on the users that are having this issue and there is no system info provided.

Are you using any type of registry cleaner apps or other security apps that may block/automagically clean registry entries for you?

Was the update installed from the admin account. This would be much less of an issue in XP but if you are using Vista it can be bit more complicated.

I have been trying to repro the problem on my end without any success so far however the above info would certainly help.

Will check my 32bit version laterz, then come back with more info...

Dave,

I installed 9.0d over 9.0c (no uninstall) on a MacBook Pro running Windowx XP SP2, with all current OS updates. I use this machine solely for audio so it is kept very clean. No virus scanner, no other security products, all power management disabled, no registry cleaner apps or anything like that. Nothing running besides OS stuff, and Sound Forge. Update was done from the admin account.

I'm still not clear what is meant by "demo mode". If it causes random tones of 100ms-1000ms in length to be written into your audio file that that is my problem, otherwise it's not.

I'm a big fan of WaveHammer so I would love to get this working again.

Thanks,
Jason

I fired up SF 9.0c the other night, informed me that their is a update available. So, just like all the other times I updated, it downloaded, installed and got rid of 9.0c.
Then the wavehammer ended up in Demo. I am running crummy Vista. That is the reason I purchased SF9, I had SF8, no problems at all.
As far as support, right now they may have some inept people working. I wrote to support, their answer was...oh, Sony just released an update a few days ago, then gave me a link. Like duh...that what screwed it up.
So, here go's again, how can the people with problems get the Demo turned off?

I tried checking the profiles on the users that are having this issue and there is no system info provided.

FWIW, my profile is up to date, and I'm using XP.

Are you using any type of registry cleaner apps or other security apps that may block/automagically clean registry entries for you?

No.

Was the update installed from the admin account.

Yes.

For now, it might help us if you told us exactly how you installed the update.

Wow. Slightly argumentative it seems. Let's work together and solve it, not shoot the messenger...(afterall. NOT everyone DOES put their system spec in their profiles)

Installed in both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista. 1 from 9c, 1 from 423. Both same result - Wavehammer demo. Run as normal (not expressly as admin mode).(ie, UAC pops up and asks, not right-click "run as admin" methadology)

Running A/V and registry cleaner (reg supreme pro).

[Personally, I don't care, as I prefer dynamics, or MBundle, but that's just me]

(ps, affects acoustic mirror too...FWIW, these 2 plugs are crica @ build 340, the others are all 600+)

J/Dave - email me if you want further info

FWIW (not that it is relevant here) I have installed the update several ways.

Installing to the default location:

1) Installing it over the initial release of 9.0 with no uninstall
2) Installing it over the 9.0a release with no uninstall
3) Installing it over the 9.0b release with no uninstall
4) Installing it over the 9.0c release with no uninstall

Installing to a non default location:

1) Installing it over the initial release of 9.0 with no uninstall
2) Installing it over the 9.0a release with no uninstall
3) Installing it over the 9.0b release with no uninstall
4) Installing it over the 9.0c release with no uninstall

Installing only the 9.0d update to the default location on a clean system.
Installing only the 9.0d update to a non default location on a clean system.

Installing on a dirty system:

Install 9.0 then uninstall 9.0 then install 9.0d.
Install 9.0a then uninstall 9.0a then install 9.0d.
Install 9.0b then uninstall 9.0a then install 9.0d.
Install 9.0c then uninstall 9.0a then install 9.0d.

Installing on a dirty system:

Install 9.0 to a non default location then uninstall 9.0 then install 9.0d to a non default location.
Install 9.0a to a non default location then uninstall 9.0 then install 9.0d to a non default location.
Install 9.0b to a non default location then uninstall 9.0 then install 9.0d to a non default location.
Install 9.0c to a non default location then uninstall 9.0 then install 9.0d to a non default location.

Then I did all of that over again with having our other apps installed. In this case DVDA Pro, Acid, Vegas.

I have done this with Win2k, XP, Vista and Vista 64.

None of these times have I been able to repro what you guys are experiencing. I'm not saying that there is not an issue. I am trying to help.

I might not have been as clear as I thought. I am specifically interested in what OS the people reporting this issue are using.

Thank you for providing the further information that I asked for.

Sony Dave, it is frustrating to get a update that makes part of the program unusable. The knowledge base sating to download SF 5 tp get rid of the Demo mode. And support saying to download the latest update that already was downloaded and screwed it up.
So, anyways, I am using Vista, I just deleted SF9, and tryed a fresh install of SF9D, and guess what, the wavehammer is still in Demo mode.

I came up with a way to get the Wave Hammer out of the Demo mode.
Hope this works for everyone else. But until Sony figures it out....
Right click on SoundForge, then click on run as administrator. Have your serial number ready, you will have to re-register SF. Then after that, if you always run it as administrator, WaveHammer is out of Demo mode. If you run it normally, Wave Hammer is in Demo mode.

Hope that helps with both a wokaround and more info for Sony to fix the problem the update caused.

The problem is in both Acoustic Mirror and Wave Hammer. I have a sledge hammer work around in
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=531858&Replies=6

In my case I installed SF9d and then the VP8c updates without running either first (could be the other way around). The problem showed up after that. Verified that both Acoustic Mirror and Wave Hammer are no longer in demo mode. SF9d has not been reinstalled.

The apps are installed in the default location running XP.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I had the same problem. I uninstalled the SF 9d, rebooted, reinstalled it, reregistered and demo mode went away...

Sony apps: VegasPro 8; Acid Pro 6; SF 8; DVDA; CDA, all the newest builds.

Vista Ultimate; Intel Q6600; Intel BadAxe mobo; 4 GG RAM.

Just tested another installation update from 9c, on an XP machine with single user (admin priovelages)

Result - Wavehammer and ACoustic Mirror both in demo mode. That's 3 machines out of 3 now that are reverting to demo.

To Win XP users:
I wonder if these problems might have anything to do with a specific version of XP? Home versus Professional? sp1 versus sp2? And further: for those that have multiple versions of SF installed on the same machine, does Wave Hammer and other plugs that have gone into demo mode after the 'upgrade' to 9.0d show as being in demo mode in the older versions? I have SF7, SF8 and SF9 (all the latest versions except for SF9 which is at rev c) all on the same machine, installed in the default locations that each installer wants to install to.

This is a longstanding problem--I've experienced it whenever I've updated the last several versions of SF. Look in the knowledge base--it was addressed for SF8.

I believe it's a registration issue. I had to re-register on 2 computers after the update. On my wireless network base pc, which is always connected to the internet, Wave Hammer works fine after re-registering. On my laptop, Wave Hammer doesn't beep when connected to the network but beeps when I disable my connection and all my antivirus/firewall software. (I don't like to record and process files when connected to the network/internet because I experience severe artifacts.) So it appears, in my case, that there may be an issue with Wave Hammer recognizing the SF registration when the laptop is not connected to the internet.

This is getting frustrating. It happens every time there's a new version and an update. And I haven't been able to use the software since the 19th. And I haven't heard back from support, who I notified on the 19th.

For the record, using XP Home SP 2, normal 9.0c to 9.0d upgrade, no problems with Wavehammer or Acoustic Mirror.

Okay, another long time Sound Forge 9d customer. I'm getting the Demo mode for Wave Hammer and Acoustic Mirror. Running Vista, etc.

So, SF 9.0d is Fubared. How long until we get a fix?

One thing I just thought of is just in the last week I swapped in a new processor. Bought the new Intel 8400 3 gz chip. Would this play havoc with activation/authorization? Windows Vista didn't complain about activation with the chip change.

had the demo mode problem for both Wave Hammer and Acoustic Mirror. I installed 9d on top of 9c. I tried to re-register 9d with this install. SF reported an error in trying to register and reported that my installation was bad. I also noticed that SF reported a computer ID number. I dont ever remember this.

I uninstalled 9d, reinstalled it, rebooted, put in my SN when requested and then registered it. All is now working as it should be.

The only piece of hardware that is different on my PC is a new hard drive (replaced a failed one). I bring this up because putting in a new hard drive can generate a new computer ID. So.... I will ask if those having problems have installed any new hardware since their original install of SF 9x. Is Sony now requiring that computer ID's match the original install?

Anyway, the fix is above. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 fully updated on and AMD Quad, Tyan MoBo.

I have now successfully installed 9.0d.

Although not everyone has said whether or not they installed this update over 9.0c, I think that's the common element in our problems.

This time, when I tried that, then launched the program, it recognized me as the registered owner, but AM and WH were in demo mode.

So I went to Help|Update User Information... and went through the process for registering from another computer. I entered the correct Authentication Code, but SF said it was invalid.

Then I uninstalled and reinstalled. Did the Authentication Code dance again, and all is well.

Bottom line, I think: Don't install 9.0d on top of 9.0c.

Well, I have to report that I installed 9.0d over 9.0c, and registered from a different computer, with no problems.

I have to report that I installed 9.0d over 9.0c

Thanks. But, since a lot of people have not reported how they tried to install, I'm still sticking with my "9.0d over 9.0c" theory until shown otherwise. Maybe it takes that plus something else.
I realized that, as a hardware change, I did plug in a USB scanner in recent weeks. That's seems so minor, but you never know. (I've changed mobo/cpu without a peep from any software company, yet some other time merely adding a hard drive changed my Computer ID. Go figure.

Dunno if helps, but try it, you have nothing to lose. As well as beeps, do you get what appears to be the start of another file or noise at the end of the wave form? If you using compressed format in wave hammer or anything else for that matter, (mp3 or other) make sure you have the 'IGNORE FAT CHUNK.....' option 'unchecked' in 'Options/preferrences'. It will show if you open a compressed file and not show if a .wav. I don't understand this process, or why anyone would want it, but it cures a lot of evils when processing, especially in lower bit rate compression or specific formats. But yes; SF9 processes with 'frighteningly' different results to SF6 or SF7 as I am experiencing, when the preset is ostensibly and precisely a direct clone. Despite some fabulous add on techniques in SF9, I'm not comfortable with it at all. (yet)

For those who have not noticed the sticky. 9e is due in a week or so, and chances are it has solved the demo issue. Also, a couple of other fixes are in there I'm sure. Might as well wait til it's out if you're affected, or not sure if you're going to be affected.
