Vegas 8 - sync offset strangeness

Ben  wrote on 10/3/2007, 5:31 PM
I'm dabbling with the Vegas 8 demo, after not having bothered with 7 at all. There's a few things I like, and a few quirks I've come across - I hope to post about some of this soon.

The major thing irking me at the moment is the "Synchronization Offset" red highlight. I understand the need for this feature when working with video (which I don't) but I'm baffled as to why it's affecting audio events. Seemingly if I do any editing on a project, I'm quickly getting these red highlights everywhere.

Very easy repro - add audio to a project, split a chunk out of the middle, move it away from it's original position. Bam - you've got a red highlight. Now I really hope I'm missing a way to switch this off, because I can't find a way to do this anywhere. It's incredibly annoying and is making my projects pretty much unintelligible.

Is everyone else seeing this? Is it a bug? Please tell me I can turn this off!

Thanks

Ben

Can anyone help me out here? Peter?

hi Ben,

Not a bug, it's a feature... was introduced with V7. It is indeed quite annoying at times, but I've never bothered to try switching it off.

Until just now...

go into the 'secret' internal prefs

type 'sync' into the "show only prefs containing" filter box

this will narrow the displayed options to two things.
Change the value of "Event Sync Tint" to "0".

You will no longer have red-tinted events.

Disclaimer: changing internal prefs may destroy your life yada yada yada...

Many thanks ibliss - I had fiddled with that in internal prefs but hadn't thought of changing the tint to 0. That helps a little. I also tried changing "Event Sync Color" to "FFFFFF" which makes the sync text background white, so it's slightly less obstrusive - you see a block of white over the waveform. But it still majorly gets in the way.

I can't believe people haven't been going more nuts about this (since Vegas 7). This is really crazy! Unless you're talking about people doing strictly audio-post work, this sync information is just not something one wants or need when working with audio. It's a major distraction.

As if we needed Sony to rub in our faces the fact that they have no time or respect for their audio users! A bizarre way to destroy some of Vegas' editing elegance in one fell swoop. A very strange decision by Sony not to give us an option for this.

I was seriously considering purchasing Vegas 8, but unless Sony give us an option to turn off this sync info altogether, I will definitely pass.

yes, I see what you mean.

If you go to the view menu and turn off 'show active take information' it gets rid of the sync info, but you then lose the more useful take names and pitch shift infor at the same time.

I'm glad someone finally brought this up. I also want to voice my disapproval with this thing. I didn't even know what it was but now that I consider it, I see that I've found myself drifting back to Vegas 6 just to avoid it. I like the new console thing in V8 but with this never ending video stuff continuing to push audio to the rear, I doubt its worth the upgrade to me.

Yes exactly - that's not a solution at all sadly as I constantly need and use the take names and pitch/time information.

A direct plea to Peter - please, please can you push for an option for this sync offset info to be totally switched off in a Vegas 8 update. Even if you just sneak it into the internal prefs, that would be enough. It's really making any serious audio work in Vegas 8 very difficult indeed. As a result, the release feels like one stop forward (with the routing improvements in 8) and two steps back (with this). Thanks in advance.

I've had assurances that this would be dealt with, but I can't see any sign of a fix in the release notes for 8a. I can't test for myself as my demo has expired and, as I've said, I won't purchase the app until this has been resolved.

Can someone who has purchased Vegas 8 confirm whether or not this has been addressed by the update?

Thanks

FWIW I find it totally inconsequential.

No, it is not in this update. I did not say it would be in a specific update.

Thanks, I understand, though that is disappointing news.

Hey Ben,

just be aware that uninstalling V8 may make most of your Sony audio plugins dissapear - fixed by a re-install/repair of V7 (or which ever version you are running).
