Drop split collection?

I don't see the instructions on how to use the drop split collection option. Do I drag and drop someting into the timeline? Or do I click on the drop split after I choose the text?
I want my text to drop and split just like the preview.

I can only drag it to the timeline to create new text (the brown fox), not to effect existing text. Then I have to edit that new text

Was trying, before I saw your post, to do exact same thing - lol

strange, because can do it with the curves - drag to existing text on timeline
