Subject:SF9 hangs when switching from FW410 to Digi002

Darn it, again this week, I spent a weekend editing in my home studio on my laptop (WinXP, SP2) using my M-Audio FW410 without any serious glitches. Today, I took my laptop to work, where I switched to my Digi002. During launch, the program just cannot get past "Initializing audio engine."

It did this to me last week, and I finally had to re-install SF9. It's older sibling, SF7, starts with no problem...even while SF9 is hung up!

Good thing I still have SF7 installed so I can get some work done.

FWIW, if this happens again, you don't have to re-install. Just hold down Ctrl+Shift while you start Forge 9.0, check the "Delete all cached application data" checkbox, and click OK.

A couple other things. Depending on the driver version, you'll probably want to add forge90.exe to the Digi-owned registry key that allows third-party applications to use the wave driver. Also, you'll want to make sure the Digi002 is powered up before starting Forge.

I get the same hang in a similar circumstance. I have a USB sound card (Behringer UCA202) and a bultin card on my laptop. I use ASIO4ALL for both of them. If I last set Sound Forge to use the USB card, and I try to start it without the USB card plugged in, SF hangs at initializing audio engine.

Since the USB card is currently wired in to my stereo for recording LP's as I get time, it means I have to go back there and plug the card in to the laptop to get SF past the init.

Seems like SF isn't handling a not connected sound card properly.

What happens if you disable/remove ASIO4All?

Doesn't the Behringer unit have native ASIO drivers?

re: Behringer native ASIO - Not really, they offer ASIO2KS for download on the site. I tried that, but removed it before finding this problem. I'll try it again when I get a chance. Like ASIO4ALL, it's a 'generic' ASIO driver, and controls the builtin (Conextant HD, ugh!) and the USB card.

I'll also try removing the ASIO4ALL driver when it's in the hung state, just to get that data point.

a) I tried the ASIO driver Behringer provides for download. No problems with SF, but it wants to manage both the UCA202 and the onboard Conextant. Unlike ASIO4ALL, it will only expose one of the devices at a time to SF via ASIO. It's an OEM version of ASIO2KS

b) If SF is in the state of hanging on audio init, removing the ASIO4ALL driver will allow SF to start with an audio device in use error.

c) The hang only occurs if both cards are enabled in ASIO4ALL and the onboard card was disabled in the device routing window of the SF audio preferences tab. So my current work around is to disable the onboard, which sends the channels to the USB, then re-enable the onboard card. That leaves the channels on the USB, where I want them, but won't cause SF to hang if I start it without the USB card.

So, to cause the hang, using ASIO4ALL (2.7 and 2.8b2 tried):

1) Plug in the USB card. In ASIO4ALL Advanced mode, enable both cards.

2) Start SF

3) Go to audio preferences, select ASIO4ALL.
At this point, I see four lines in the device routing window (playback and record windows are the same). Two lines for the onboard Conextant, with a checked enable check box next to it's line one, and the odd channels checked. Next to the Conextant line 2 is a greyed out enable check box (checked) and the even channels are checked. Then there are two lines for the USB device. Both enable boxes are checked, the second greyed out, and no channels are selected.

4) Disable the Conexant device by unchecking the enable box, both in playback and record. All channels move to the USB device, and the enable boxes for the USB device are greyed out.

5) Apply the audio preferences settings.

6) Exit SF

7) Unplug the USB device

8) Start SF, will hang on 'Initializing audio engine'

We will have a look see, though I cannot make any promises because we don't have this hardware in house.

Have you contacted the vendor of ASIO4ALL? What was there response ?(other than "It works with Cubase...").

Because of the difficulty I've always had in finding any appropriate information in Digidesign's Answerbase, I've included the link to their registry edit instructions:

http://answerbase.digidesign.com/detail.cfm?DID=27424

I found it buried in one of their PDF manuals, so I included it here in case it might help someone else.

While "delete all cached application data" works in the short run, any user should be advised that this will erase user preferences. In other words, you will have to set up your toolbars, meters and other preferences as if you re-installed the program.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
