OT: Another loss

Just heard that director Bob Clark and his son were killed today when a drunk driver hit them. Of course the drunk driver was not killed.

What a waste of life. For those who don't know Bob is best known for the, now, family holiday classic A Chirstmas Story but those who were into cult horror films he also directed the 1974 "classic" Black Christmas, which stared a young Margot Kidder and was recently remade. He also did the Porky's movies which I guess put more of a spotlight on him but really I would say A Christmas Story will be his legacy.

I was lucky enough to work with Darren McGavin in the early 90's. He said that the Christmas Story was one of his best film experiences ever. It's seems apparent in the film.

The movie has contributed at least two phrases into the public vernacular:

"You'll shoot your eye out!!!"

"I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU!!!"

I also would love to find a leg lamp, especially one that came in a huge wooden crate that obviously came from Italy since it was marked "fra-gi' le."

I'm not ashamed to admit, I have a leg lamp, albeit a scaled-down version. Got it for Christmas this past year. I love it, and I love the movie. Also love the other movies mentioned here.

Man, both he and his son were killed. A few weeks ago it was Brad Delp and Richard Jeni. It's another reminder that our time on the planet is all too short.

I've got a smaller version of the Old Man w/ leg Lamp figurine. Classic.

as for the actual thing?

The actual house (exteriors) used in the film has been restored as well, with the house across the street now selling Christmas Story merchandise.

Oh that's sad.

Xmas story was a classic.

Of course it's usually overlooked but I think he pulled off more groundbreaking work in his cult flick "Black Xmas". Good concept, original filming, his own style...yet it flew under the radar naturally as it targeted a slimer audience ( horror flicks). Some say it set the tone for Halloween and films like it to come, although Carpenter has his own style and flair as well.

Thanks for the link, Cheno! My best friend and I love this movie and quote it often (The Scutt Farkus affair, as it came to be known). I have just found his Christmas present for next year.

Damn, why do we seem to take such a casual attitude when someone commits murder in this way? You'd think that after a couple hundred thousand innocent people were killed, we'd decide to you know.... actually DO something about the problem.

Sorry... unexpected soapbox this morning.

For 20 years I've been warning people about driving on Pacific Coast Highway through the 23 miles of Malibu at night, especially Friday through Sunday. It is truly life threatening.

The problem? This section of PCH is packed with restaurants and drunk drivers who all seem to think of it as a rural area with no police stations visible to remind them of their responsibilities.

The concentration of drunk drivers here Friday-Sunday is higher than anywhere else in Los Angeles, and that alone should say something.

I really hope this is enough to get more patrols going there.

Bob Clark was killed when the drunk's GMC Yukon swerved across the road right in front of Bob's Infiniti Q30.

Instant Vehicular Manslaughter charges and more per LA Times.

I loved "A Christmas Story". This whole thing makes me want to go rent it.

Seeing those pictures of the crash, the Yukon pretty much steamrolled the Infiniti. So even when you wear your seatbelts and the airbags go off, some crashes are just too severe to survive.

The Coast Highway is nasty. Years ago I dropped out of college for 5 years and drove a concrete truck out of Santa Monica during that time, pouring concrete for all the tony addresses in Malibu. I was surprised there weren't more accidents along that busy stretch of road.

The writer of "A Christmas Story" was a guy named Jean Shepherd, who died a few years back. He was the narration voice in the movie and also the first man in the Santa line in the department store. He tells Ralphie that the line starts way back elsewhere in the store.

Bob Clark had a cameo part in the movie. He was "Swede," the guy who sees the leg lamp in the window from across the street.

I went to the website selling leglamps. Wow, $350 for a full-sized lamp packed in a wooden crate! Gotta love capitalism!

It's a shame to lose a talented person like this, and his son, just because some drunk a--hole got on the road.

I *really* wish we'd spend more resources on our LEOs, CHPs, police to have more resources to allocate to drunk driving, plus extend more policing near bars.

So many people's lives are lost because of people on drugs and alcohol driving when they shouldn't be, and the general public is too dishonest and stupid to be trusted in such matters, obviously.

I would be willing to pay a bit more in taxes to support more law enforcement on the road, that's for sure.

Christmas Story is my families favorite holiday movie. We watch it about 3 times each Christmas. Great movie, Great Lamp and a Great loss.
