Subject:5.1 No Audio Right Front & Rear

Vegas 7 Platinum
Replicated the one sound track to try Surround. The audio was put on Front, Center, LFE and Rear tracks. The settings set to 5.1 (AGC on & off). The DVD does not play sound from the Right Front or Right Rear speakers either on my Home theater system (set to Dolby Digital Surround) or the computer. I tried playing the Video_TS file with PowerDVD, audio on Right Front, no audio Right Rear. When I play the AC3 file alone I do get audio on all my computer speakers.
I didn't do any panning, I just left the tracks as they were.
If it matters, my audio card is Audigy 2 ZS.

Lots of people read these messages but most will not answer unless they think they might be able to offer some help. In your case there are so many variables that most people probably thought it would be more trouble that it's worth even attempting to work out where you are going wrong.

It's not at all clear from what you have posted whether your problem is that you are not creating an AC3 file with any audio in the rear channels or whether you are creating a correct AC3 file and the problem is occurring when you try to play it back.

As a first step, please post a small sample AC3 file created using your methods somewhere we can download it and see whether the file has audio information in all the channels. Once we know the answer to that we can see which direction to go in.

Mark, thanks for the reply. I've got a small (1K) AC3 file. Never posted anything for downloading on the Web. Suggestions?

Well, for a start 1k seems extremely small for an AC3 file so there may be something wrong already. At a typical 5.1 data rate of 448kbps a 1k file would be only 20 milliseconds long. I'm guessing that your 1k is a mistake and you really meant 1MB which would be a more sensible size for a test file - about 20 seconds long.

There are literally hundreds of places you can post such a file these days. If you don't have any webspace of your own you can use, just post it on one of the numerous free file sharing sites. I normally use Rapidshare but there are lots of others.

I wrote 1,000 times on the blackboard '1,000 Kb does not equal 1Kb'
I may be on the right track in solving this. On a hunch, I opened the audio track in Magix Cleaning Lab.
Split the stereo tracks, then exported the audio back to the AVI.
When I opened the AVI in Sony Studio the track now had wave form on both sides of the horizontal center line.
I replicated this track to the other tracks and rendered.
Now there is audio out of all speakers in surround mode.
Am I right in concluding that there must be audio above and below that line for the program to process the AC3 properly?
If so, is there a procedure in Movie Studio 7 Platinum to accomplish this or is it necessary to go out to another program as I did with Magix? There doesn't seem to be much detailed help in the little manual. It is nice to have it spiral-bound though.

I'm afraid I'm not able to understand what you are doing.

It should not be necessary to use anything outside Vegas and DVD Architect to produce a DVD with 5.1 audio, you just have to do things correctly in Vegas to produce a 5.1 AC3 that DVD Architect can use.

As I said before, it is not yet clear whether you are producing the AC3 correctly, or whether your problem is that the AC3 is correct and the problem is occurring when you try to play it back. To allow us to make progress we need to determine whether the AC3 files you are creating are correct.

Please just post a sample file somewhere we can have a look at it and then we will know how to proceed. Until then there are just too many variables to make it worth thinking about.

Thanks Mark. I'll get back as soon as I've done a little more experimenting and troubleshooting on my own.

I seem to have solved the problem. I do all my capturing with Scenalyzer through my ADVC100. There is a setting in Scenalyzer to capture a second channel if present. I had never forced that, or it had been reset to capture a single channel. I set it to the second channel. Now I have full Dolby D sound on all the speakers.
