It's kind of like how percussion notation is different from traditional notation; percussion notation is not as lyrical as traditional notation (since most percussion doesn't have a definite pitch, just timbre).

Using the drum grid simplifies the process of working with percussion. You would, of course, use the piano roll when working with more melodic material (e.g., pads, piano, etc.).

How do you enable the drum-grid when editing a MIDI clip via the piano roll? As far as I can tell - using "G" to toggle the view only works when using in-line MIDI editing.

Am I missing something?

If you are using a softsynth or voice/drum patch map, selection a drum patch/voice on the track will place the inline editor automatically into drum grid mode.

If the synth or external device does not have a voice set, then you can select a drum mapping on the track from the voice selection context menu or the MIDI Track Properties view.

I'm still missing something.

I created a new drum map. I have associated with the track - near as I can tell. I see the note-names in the inline editor. However, when I use the PRV in the "clip properties" view - I see the usual piano keys.

The drum mappings do not "map" to the Clip Properties Piano Roll.

That is, there is no Drum Grid mode for the non-inline Piano Roll.

Are there plans to add that in a future release Peter? Because it would be very useful. I work with two monitors and would sometimes like to keep the regular timeline on the main screen and have the piano roll on a drum track on the second screen but as a Drum Grid.

It has been requested many times.
We are reviewing it as a feature for a future version of ACID.

Make sure you submit a formal feature request from "Product Suggestion" option in the Support menu Item above.
