XP64 Vegas/Architect

SandyG wrote on 2/5/2007, 6:00 PM
Hi all -

I am just getting started with Vegas 7d and DVD Architect 4. I have them all seeming working OK on XP64... Well almost, if I go to the 'Make DVD' button in Architect or Burn CD in Vegas I get the Blue Screen of Death pop, and basically kill my machine.

I'm using a Plextor 716SA as the DVD/CD burner that seems to work OK reading and installing software, but I have had other problems on a different machines with the SATA DVD drive so might suspect it.

I have seen a few folks that are running it (Vegas) on the list with XP64, but it never saw many tips on installing other then first loading the .NET environment.

Can anyone running XP64 give some tips on anything else special that might need to be done?

Lastly, might be a dumb question and the whole problem, but do I need to run a dvd burning software package like NERO to use the burn features in either software.

Sorry for the ramble but any help is very much aprecieated!

Sandy

Running XP64, 8800 Leadtek, 8GB Ram, Shuttle XPC 37p2, Plextor 716SA (SATA) DVD burner

Sandy,

Can't help you with any of the 64 stuff, however, DVDA is what you need to burn the DVDs.

fyi, burners released after your version of DVDA might not work (was an issue with older DVDA versions & older burners).

I just use nero as it's got less problems (sometimes). Give that a shot. Just use DVDA to prep the DVD.

Thanks, I will likely not expect DVDA to burn the disk, but odd that it does a hard blue screen when tries to access it. Likely driver issues on the XP64 side. Not even sure if Nero is supported on the XP64 platform.

I would still love to hear from any others that are running on XP64 and what success/failure they have had.

Thanks so far!

I know this may not help, but I'm running X64 and both Vegas and DVDA work fine and to double check, I tried both problem areas you mentioned and all worked fine.

I didn't do anything special on this system, except the .NET environment. that you've already mentioned.

I have a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, AMD 64 X2 4800 processor, 8GB Ram, Lite-On SOHW 1693S DVDRW, all SATA drives.

FWIW personally consider an app like Nero a necessity (like a word processor) on every PC... If you can't spring for the full version, still plenty of v. 6 OEM discs out there, & they have a trial so you can check with your system if you want. SO far no prob with 64 bit. [knock wood :?P]

Thanks for the feed back, if it is working on a few folks' XP64 where mine system BSOD's then likely it is the DVD Writer. I'm going to pull it out and put in a older Samsung burner and see if it still has the issue.

Good stuff, and yes, nero is likely to be install, but another not yet officially supported under 64bit mode. I have 6 on a bunch of other boxes and usually works good.

Update the firm ware on the 716SA, didn't help. Pulled it, went back to my old faithful Samsung burner and seems to be just fine. So looks like working ok now on XP64 it was just an odd DVD burner that Sony's software can't deal with in a friendly manner (BSOD is not friendly).

In any case thanks again for all the comments and suggestions!

As you apparently saw for yourself, I think the drive and it's drivers are probably the entire issue. When I setup my x64 System I made sure the drive would be compatible with the OS before I purchased it.

I think (could be wrong) the first Plextor drive that ever boasted XP x64 compatibility was the 760 (which came out last year). Last summer (2006) I actually wrote to Sony, and they said their drives don't support x64 and they had no plans of changing that.

Pretty much all of Asus's somewhat newer drives support x64. That's what I have at home. Asus relies on the OS to control the drives; you don't even have to install a driver. My Asus drive works like a champ in XP x64. I think it might actually be a re-branded Panasonic or Pioneer drive.

There are some others. I think (not sure) that there is a fairly cheap NEC dual-layer DVD drive that supports x64. Last summer you could get it from NewEgg for about $30. Probably cheaper now.

Finally, Nero and Roxio don't make a drive compatible. But of course they do provide some great functionality. For my own part, I find that the OEM version of Nero that got bundled with my Asus drive was quite adequate for my needs. It didn't install the gazillions of extra apps that come with the full package.

I guess you figured all this out by now, but I thought I'd just share my own experiences to add to it.

The odd thing is that I loaded XP64 and used the drive for some other audio stuff just fine with the Plextor 716SA. It would instantly BSOD the Asus 8N SLI Deluxe Mobo on any activity (The current is a shuttle sd37p2). So just the first gen SATA stuff is a bit more touchy. Oh well, at least I can put the cover back on the box, and my 39 dollar Samsung will carry the torch :)

And for Video software X64 would seem like the only way to go given the huge data size requirements, and it's only getting bigger (for professional versions that is). I have 8 gig sad that more can't be used for Vegas. But that I guess is left to new versions Vegas...

My mobo is an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe. It doesn't give any BSODs. I think this mobo is a successor of yours, i.e. not first gen for SATA.
