too few tracks - workaround?

Would somebody have some advice for a workaround (besides upgrading to the full version of Vegas) for the following, given the VMS four video track max.

I've use my top two layers of video for composting a mask, but only want that effect to apply to only a segment of the overall video. Outside of this effect, I need those two tracks for some PIP stuff in the rest of the project.

What is the best way to proceed - should I render the two composted tracks in avi, then reinsert it back into the timeline as a single track? If so, what would be the optimal settings so as not to loose too much quality after I reinsert then render this segment again as part of the larger project?

Or, is there any other way so as to make the composted segment not effect the whole project?

Thanks for any help.

Actually, disregard that prior post.

The more experience I get with VMS, the more limited I find myself in what I want to do.

I'm taking the $99 plunge for vegas 6 from B&H.

Time to move over to the Vegas forum!

After my first hour-long project I thought the same way, and went ahead and got 6, too. Just having 3D track motion is reason enough to jump. You can make DVDs with DVD Studio if you don't need something too hefty.

May I inquire as to how you purchase Vegas 6 for $99, even as an upgrade?

Could you post a link to find this free upgrade to V7?
Thanks.

Link

You can also access it from the Support link at the top of the page, then 'Knowledgebase'. I faxed them a copy of the order from B&H along with the serial number of Vegas 6 and recieved an email about an hour later with download link.

I just called Sony's 800 number. The free upgrade from Vegas 6 to Vegas 7 (if you buy the $99 Vegas 6 from B&H or another qualified reseller) is no longer available. The "within 30 days of product launch" ended yesterday, September 12th.
