Yay!!! A new plugin for Vegas! - NewBlue FX

jkrepner wrote on 5/8/2006, 7:20 AM
There is a new plugin for Vegas (as well as other NLE) call NewBlue FX. I was part of their beta testing program and was really impressed with their stuff. I didn't get a chance to use many of the audio filters, but have been using the video fx quite a bit. I've used the motion filters, called "Motion Effects" (camera shake & motion blur, zoom blur, foreground blur) for creating moving titles and motion graphics. The "Art Effects" has stuff like line drawing, airbrush, and dream glow. I used the line drawing effect in a video I'm working on now and people have been asking me if I scanned a real drawing or was it actually an effect. Anyway, I much prefer New Blue's blurs and glows over Sony's built in stuff and it's always cool to get some new plugins for Vegas.

Go give it a try, they have a demo you can download. (I just checked their home page and they have a free effect for Vegas users!)

I went to the NewBlue Video section of their web site and downloaded their free halo fX. Pretty neat. The other stuff looks good too. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you!

I tried the halo fx but it doesn't seem to work well with generated media, I tried to put a texture and the halo fx on it and it becomes black and remains black even if I remove the fx... weird.

I really like their UI though.
jkrepner wrote on 5/8/2006, 10:47 AM
Nat, it seems to work here. I placed a standard noise texture on the timeline and then applied the Halovision effect and it seemed to work okay.

That's odd,

I reformatted my computer and it can't be cleaner than it is now. I'll try again.
Nat wrote on 5/8/2006, 11:43 AM
Tried again, as soon as I move the dials in the plugin the output window goes black. Really strange.

Same here on my system. Sometimes it's going bit faster and sometimes bit slower to black. But it seems to happen any time I try to adjust a value. I have to choose a predefined preset but I cannot really adjust anything. Tested with this halovision plug.

Strange. I'm on a laptop today with Vegas 5 I can try Vegas 6 later today. Which version are you guys on? I sent an email to them to see if they can assist.

Thanks folks for finding this. Fortunately, we are able to reproduce the problem and can assure you this is not the intended behavior! I'll post back as soon as we have a solution ready for download.

Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback, are you guys looking for other testers ?
ken c wrote on 5/8/2006, 12:42 PM
hey those are some very cool fx! btw it works fine on my win2k computer, even though the info page says winxp required... excellent ... I'm probably going to get it.

hmm any chance you can post a discount coupon code for us to use with the motion plug-in? I'll buy either way, thought it wouldn't hurt to ask though ... :-)

Very glad to hear you like the effects!

Yes, we say WinXP required. They should run fine on Win2K but we haven't tested all the permutations (and we did have one report of weirdness on one Win2K machine.) You've verifed that it works on yours, so you are fine.

Yes, as a matter of fact, we do have an introductory $40 off coupon for our friends in the Vegas community. It applies to purchasing the Art Effects and Motion Effects products together. After placing the two products in the shopping cart, add the coupon: CPNINTROVIDEO.

RE the testing request..

Hmmm, good question since we missed that one on Halovision!
We actually had a great set of testers for the first round. But... Halovision wasn't on the list (we put it together last minute.)

We're working on some new stuff, so yes, we could use testers in the future. If you are interested, go to our contact page and send in a request http://newbluefx.com/contact.html.

NewBlue,

You will be happy to know the plugin works perfectly in Vegas 4.0 under W98SE. I just tried the halo effect around a bald guy's head. In a word...............awesome!

Thank You.

Hmmmm... I could use some hair... I'll try it on myself...
ken c wrote on 5/8/2006, 2:20 PM
lol re hair...

It's great to see all the talented folks creating kick-butt plug-ins for Vegas, eg Ultimate S, Excalibur, Ozone, and this NewBlue one .. significantly extends the creative palette of what Vegas can do.

Good news - we solved the Halovision bug. The fix is tested and up on the site. You can download it from www.newbluefx.com or just put http://newbluefx.com/setups/SetupHalovision.php into your browser.

For the curious: It was writing back over the image created by the media generator. That's why it would get progressively darker.

Thanks,

terrific tech support ... I was having an activation issue, got a phone call and we fixed it...

quick faq re activation, if it's not activating, it's likely due to a firewall not letting it activate online... so just click the "buy online" button and that'll prompt your firewall to let it through, then close that, and re-enter the serial, and it'll work great.

looking forward to using these fx, excellent work on them.

"And all FX Work on VMS too!! Hoorrah!"

That's actually a really good. There's a HUGE VMS base out there that's growing by leaps and bounds. Should provide a very substantial customer base for them to work with.

Wow, what an impressive set of tools :)

With regard to the black frame, i was getting this, and still do, however to work around it, just hit play on ur transport panel, it will bring your frame back with the filter active. Problem with it though, is that one cannot tweak and view their progress. A good trick i found was to loop the footage and run teh filter on that clip then tweak and the looping will continually update the tweak

any idea of an update fix??
NewBlueFX wrote on 5/8/2006, 11:16 PM
DJPadre,

I'm glad you like the tools! Not so glad you are still running into the Halovision bug. Did you download the updated bits? To be certain, please go to www.newbluefx.com and redownload, then run the setup for Halovision.

After you do that, if you are still running into this problem, I'll greatly appreciate the steps to reproduce it so we can figure out what's going on.

Thanks,

I didnt run the updated exe when i wrote that post, but now that i have, I have to say that the probelm is gone (V5 and V6)
The soft focus preset on that particular plug is awesome... :)
Add it just after you add some curves... hmm.. yummy !!!!
ken c wrote on 5/9/2006, 5:34 AM
I'm impressed with this company's initial products.. nice work. There's likely a decent demand out there for plug ins, especially fx type (kind of like izotope ozone, but for video effects) ... so it's great to see developers bringing new product to vegas.

for example, I like bluff titler a lot, but what I'd Really like to see is a new TITLER plug-in, maybe work w/bluff's developer, to create a plug-in version that's fully usable from within vegas ...

other ideas/needs, for plugins, so we can communicate these to newblue + others considering developing plug-ins?

ken

another that comes to mind is a "Lower Thirds Manager" type plugin, kind of what's in Ultimate S, but that can use our digital juice and other video footage, to make that process easy ... eg point it to a media subdirectory, and be able to automatically preview video clips as lower thirds, by scrolling (kind of like how you can see what different fonts look like, by scrolling through them w/macromedia fireworks)...
