Subject:FX and SOFT SYNTH Properties SOLID BLACK
Posted by: dirtynbl

I'm editing an ACID project and whenver I try to add any plug-in or view the properties of any of my synths in this project I click over to the tab or simply click the little add FX button I'm greeted with a solid black screen. I know the effects are working because if I close the tab I can see the black disappear for a second and then reappear before it closes revealing the effect.

What's goin on?

Sounds like it could possibly be graphics card display problems. Try turning off hardware graphics acceleration (from the Windows desktop right-click and select Properties / Settings / Advanced / Troubleshooting)

Did you change anything about your PC lately? I assume this just started and they did display correctly at one time. What changed?

no, its not a graphics card problem.

other projects display soft synth properties properly as well as fx properties correctly. also, the black screen is limited to the tab. when i click over to the mixer tab the blackness is replaced by a completely visible mixing tab. its just fx and soft synth properties.

the timeline and the rest of acid are completely visible and normal.

Try disabling "Use WinXP themes" in the Acid preferences menu. I may have the words wrong - not at my music PC right now. I had a similar problem with the track bar and solved it this way.

well, that didn't fix the problem, but acid loads a million times faster with XP theme support disable so, thank you very much for that, but I'm still stuck with this black screen.

I've upgraded to Acid 6 and the problem persists, but is more sparatic now. Randomly some Acid files will have this problem, and some wont. Once the files develop this problem there seems to be no going back.

I don't understand why the program is even able to do this. Its like there's an opaque black overlay covering the area where the fx properties are supposed to be.

http://www.formerfatboys.com/acid.jpg is where you can see a screenshot of what I'm referring to. Someone please help me get rid of this. I'm desperately hoping to be able to salvage all the editing and stuff I've done in Acid for my second album. Switching to a new interface now will be awful.

Hey, your not alone dirtynbl. I see the same thing in ACID Pro 6. Like you, I am not sure what triggers it, but it does seem, to occur, at random. I've had it happen, in a brand "New" empty project, after adding a SoftSynth bus and an instance of ACID Pro 6 Kompact. The only way to get rid of it is to re-boot the computer and then it is back to normal again. Until the next time. :-(

P.S. I've reported this bahavior to ACID tech support, along with before & after screenshots that illustrate this phenomenon.

well at least I'm not the only one. i was really hoping it would be fixed in 6. why is acid so fragile?!?!?!

i wonder if comparing a list of installed plugins and vsts might shed some light...

Does anything different happen if you undock the fx window?

No, the behavior persists, until you re-boot the computer.

billy, i just did a complete reinstall of windows and I'm going to systematically reinstall all of my vsts and stuff until I get to the problem. I'll let you know if i figure it out.

If I can't, well, I'm gonna look into another audio program. Why it is even possible for the effect window to be covered with an opaque overlay is beyond me.

At least wait for an update before reinstalling your system.

I know waiting can be frustrating, but sometimes, as I always say for these kind of things, the more you wait, the better it gets. Since this bug is not an exception (as you're not the only one experiencing this), I think it's been noticed.

[edit]
Oh I see you already did reinstall XP. Anyway, don't give up yet.

except for that fact that they didn't bother to correct the bug between acid pro 5 and 6. it occurred in both.

the reinstall helped for a bit, but now its back.

and so is the instability. throw a mix of vsti's, reason on rewire and acid closes every time you hit play.

this is why more studios and actual musicians don't use this stuff. its the easiest to use but it can't be counted to be robust. seriously sony. do you even test this stuff with high end vsts?
