Subject:ACID Pro 6.0 takes over the audio device

Hi guys,

I just installed the new ACID Pro 6.0 and cannot make recording work.

What happens is that when active, ACID Pro 6.0 takes over the entire audio device exclusively, and I cannot play any other audio source from my computer by means of any other application.

At the same time, I don't have this problem at all with Sound Forge (8.0d) which would allow any source to play and records it beautifully. Unfortunately, only a single track at the time! (multi-track recording was the whole point of upgrading to ACID Pro 6.0, but I cannot even record a single track in ACID Pro 6.0 from say a DVD movie etc.).

The problem could probably be solved (I guess) if it was possible to select separate "Playback" and "Recording" audio devices in ACID Pro 6.0, but there is only possible to select a single device. Moreover, ACID Pro 6.0 does not seem to care which ASIO I/O ports/channels I'm assigning to it (e.g. to avoid conflicts with playing sources), it takes over the whole device and don't allow any other application to output its sound standalone or in parallel with ACID Pro 6.0 (while this works fine across/among other applications, including the Sound Forge).

Of course, I may be doing something stupid, nevertheless I do struggle with figuring out what's wrong.

My audio device is the Fireface800 from RME (great unit!) and I'm using its FW800 interface. Works like a dream with anything else but the new ACID Pro 6.0 in the mode described above. Here's brief specification of the RME Fireface800:
- FireWire 800 / 400 Digital I/O System
- 10 + 16 + 2 Channels Analog / ADAT / SPDIF Interface
- 24 Bit / 192 kHz Digital Audio
- 56 x 28 Matrix Router
- MIDI I/O
- Stand-Alone Operation

I'd greatly appreciate any help or advice that you may provide.

Thanks!
Willy

I don't have this issue. I can run a Windows media player, AP6, and Soundforge all using the same driver. However, depending on the driver I use, I may have issues with stability. For example, my EMU ASIO driver will eventually cause AP6 to core dump. The ASIO4ALL driver or Microsoft Sound Mapper does not.

I am dumping my EMU card for an RME or Frontier card. Will be interested to hear of your resolution.

Did you get this worked out?.. It looks like it has been several months now. I am looking at buying a Fireface 400 or 800 and would like to know how they work with Sony.

ACID does not completely take over an ASIO device. It takes over the inputs and outputs that you tell it to, nothing more or less. So if the device has 8 outputs, ACID will use the first pair by default. If it has 8 inputs it will not use any until you arm a track for record.

ACID does not reserve the remaining available ports exposed by the ASIO device driver. Whether or not these can be shared/used by other applications is dependent on the drivers for the RME and the other application. ACID has no control over this.

No, you cannot mix and match ASIO devices. ASIO is a single device interface so you are limited to using one ASIO device at a time. This is in part due to limitations of the ASIO architecture. There would also be a significant problem/issue with keeping two different devices and their drivers in sync with each other. I am not aware of any of the ASIO hosts out there that let you mix and match physically different ASIO hardware for use simultaneosly.

If you want to do this, tell ACID to use the Wave drivers of the RME. Wave is much more flexible in how it permits sharing of ports.

I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish though. If you could provide a example of extactly how what you are doing in Froge that does work and exactly what you want ACID to do, that would be helpful. Please be specific with the apps you are using externally to ACID and how you have them configured.

Peter
