Hello

” Sony Media Software and Corel Form Strategic Partnership to Release Joint Digital Imaging and Video Solutions. Co-Marketing and Co-Bundling Partnership Will Yield New Solutions That Address Mass Market Demand for Greater Ease of Use, Affordability.

Two Software Bundles Targeted at Consumers and Serious Hobbyists, Visual Creation Studio and Visual Creation Studio Pro, Will Be Released In Time For Holiday Season."

See:

Does anybody have more information about the partnership / cooperation between Sony Media Software and Corel? And what this possibly could imply for Vegas?

Best wishes,
Joran

No but it's sure an interesting question. It does kind of make sense though in a corporate kind of way.

Many times, products that get sold to Corel get sold again and end up at the $9.99 bins at the store. No support after the second sell.

Hopefully, this is not what this means.

Yep, Corel is usually a death knell for software. :(

Chienworks,

"Corel is usually a death knell for software."

I don't know what examples you are thinking of, but I can think of a few cases when Corel rescued a software application from certain death. Fractal Painter was going under and Corel rescued it as Corel Painter and has done a pretty good job of improving it and marketing it. Word Perfect was a goner and Corel has tried to keep it alive despite withering competion from Microsoft Word. Corel's own Corel Draw & Photopaint have continued a steady cycle of improvement with frequent new versions.

For years Adobe pretty much ignored the low end of the photo-editing market, much to the benefit of little Paint Shop. When Adobe finally woke up and made Elements 3 dominant in that market, Paint Shop was in trouble and Corel acquired them.

I have to admit I am underwhelmed at the prospect of bundling Sony's Vegas Movie Studio + DVD with Corel's Photo Album 6 or with bundling Sony's Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum Edition with Corel's Paint Shop Pro X.

When I first heard about this Sony/Corel venture I was excited that maybe someone at Sony had discovered the little-known remarkable video processing capabilities of Corel's Painter, and that we would see Vegas exploit that. But apparently that is not what is going on.

It's obviously intended to compete with this bundle

I think one interesting question (for us Vegas users) is: Will Sony Media Software purchase Corel, or will Corel acquire / take over Sony Media Software?

Another question: How many people are dedicated to (media) software production in Sony Media Software and in the “same” division in Corel?

"or will Corel acquire / take over Sony Media Software"
I hope not. See above post. I hope they stay in their own niche. This is the most supportive forum I have ever seen for a software product. Thanks to the very professional people involved and the professional nature of the product Vegas has become. And the Forum Admins who pop in when necessary.

I would hate to see anything change that.

Of course not! Sony Software isn't going to be acquired by Corel or vice-versa.
It's a partnership in a product package. Nothing more, nothing less. Companies partner in bundle deals all the time. It's just a bundle to incentivize purchasers of either software and to help with the market for both products. It's gotten to the point now that some resellers demand bundles from manufacturers, especially on the consumer side.
Boris and Magic Bullet/Red Giant enjoyed similar press releases to this one; is anyone thinking that Boris is being acquired by Sony Software? Or thinking Magic Bullet is buying Sony Software?
Hmm...my HDV book is in this consumer bundle too...I wonder if that means Sony is buying me? Or better....maybe I'm buying Sony Software? :-)

"Or better....maybe I'm buying Sony Software? :-)"

Would you like investors?
Spot|DSE wrote on 10/1/2005, 6:02 PM
Sure!! You got an extra hundred mil or so laying around? I prefer cash, of course.
fldave wrote on 10/1/2005, 6:05 PM
Let's see. Powerball is $167 million tonight.
Will that be enough?

Edit. Seriously, I hope that Sony understands the gem they have here in this product and community.

Douglas, how do you know that ”Sony Software isn't going to be acquired by Corel or vice-versa.”?

I think the main question is how deep (can I use that word in English?) the integration between the Sony products and the Corel products will be.

Integration - I hope not. Take a look at www.dpreview and see the comments on the results of Corel buying JASC software and "improving" Paint Shop Pro.

*heavy sigh*....No one at Sony has said "We're not being purchased by Corel." No one at Sony has said "We're being purchased by Corel."
So, I don't know as in, "I know the sun will rise tomorrow morning," that there isn't a transaction taking place. Anymore than it's just speculation and ridiculous rumor that something IS taking place.

The press release is related ENTIRELY to the consumer market space. Not one character in the press release suggests, hints, or intimates that there are business deals in the background. More importantly, most of it is a boilerplate press release. Common, expected, regular. "Using standard Windows Drag n' Drop interface." Now, does that sound like anything really special was engineered for this product? It's a "co-marketing/co-bundling program." Simple, common, and expected at this time of the year.
Vegas Movie Studio has been bundled EVERY year in the holiday sales period, when it was Video Factory, and probably when it's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Uber edition. EVERYONE in this industry (consumer) is fighting for eyes and $$ of people at the computer/electronics/gadget stores. And it takes bundling to make that work and to get those eyes. It's called leveraging market share.
Avid has been bundling Ulead DVD Workshop, so has Canopus. Does that suggest that either Canopus or Avid is buying Ulead? Not hardly. Or for a better example, CineForm's codec is now bundled with Vegas. Does that mean CineForm is buying Sony Media, or vice versa? Nope.

Joran, if Sony is purchased by Corel or Corel is purchased by Sony Media Software, I'll fly you to NYC and we'll have dinner after spending an afternoon at B&H. You're devoting entirely too much worry time to a non-issue. It's reminiscent of the Chicken Little story.
Jøran Toresen wrote on 10/1/2005, 7:27 PM
Douglas, don’t be so upset.

I hope that Sony purchases Corel! This implies that Sony really wants to make Vegas a better product – and that we can have a nice dinner in NYC!

Best wishes,
Joran

Every (80% with a computer) baby boomer geek will be editing video within the next couple of years on their computers. I hope the goal will be to make it easier for the novice to easily create cool DVDs of their grandkids.

And I hope that spills over into the few percentage that then goes all out on HDV and Vegas+DVD. More market share.

I understand
Spot|DSE wrote on 10/1/2005, 8:06 PM
LOL, I'm not upset, I'm chuckling. (I think it's humorous) that a single bundle deal of 2005 has rumors flying about one company buying another.
Vegas Movie Studio isn't Vegas. You won't find Sony Vegas on the shelf at Best Buy, and you won't find professional integrators like BOXX putting Vegas Movie Studio on their computers. Very different markets for two very different products.

I'd enjoy having dinner with you Joran, but I'm hoping you're not getting your bags packed.
You anywhere near Tromso or are you on the other end, nearer Oslo?
farss wrote on 10/1/2005, 10:09 PM
I seriously hope (I'm an aetheist so I can't pray) that they're NOT making DVDs of their kids. We can do a pretty good job of pulling images back off 50 year old 8mm film, even VHS is still holding up but what do you do to get something back from a DVD once it's exceeded its life (currently 10 years for the very best media that's been stored properly)?

Spot, just a minor note, but Best Buy DID used to sell Vegas in the past. Maybe not all of them, but the one on Olympic & the 405 used to have Vegas 4. At one point they had it marked down to $199. That was for the FULL version with DVDA even! (Though that price was when they were phasing it out from their shelves.)

Douglas, I live in Oslo – but I was born in the northern part of Norway, not that far from Tromso. (And I have not packed my bags yet!)

I'm a newbie here, but my local BestBuy is selling Vegas Movie Studio + DVD for $30 after rebates. Does that count? ;^)

I'll create a separate thread for this, but I'm wondering if this would be a good, inexpensive choice for someone who is looking for a better edit/render/burn solution than Studio 9?
Spot|DSE wrote on 10/3/2005, 1:31 PM
This would be an excellent, non-crashing alternative to Studio 9, yes.
