Subject:Silence at start of master song

I have noticed that tracks on commercial CD's begin with a silence before the song starts, e.g. 300 ms.

Is that useful ? Why ? What's the best values for that silence (100 ms, 300 ms, less or more...) ?

Probably to leave some space so that you don't cut off the beginning of the music when skipping around on a cd player.

I've encountered a few CD players that stutter just a bit when skipping to a different song. The silence at the beginning keeps this stutter happening before the music starts. Software CD players often have this problem too to a much greater degree.

Lately i've started using 500ms. It's short enough to be almost unnoticeable, but long enough to avoid stuttering problems.
