SQL Server Desktop Engine

DGrob wrote on 4/28/2005, 12:09 PM
My installation of V6 concludes with an SQL installation routine which hangs, and fails after a couple of minutes. Did a search here and in the knowledge base. Any insights? Is this a Sony or MS problem and can someone point me in the right direction. Media Manager is not available without this installation. Thanks all. Darryl

I am having the same problem... anybody...

As someone who'se had more than a little experience with MS SQL Server this is a tad scary. Certainly it's one way to get a beefy database system for free however I've found it a bit of a beast to control. Part of the engine keeps trying to find something to connect to every few minutes which caused major grief with real time performance. Only solution I had was to completely uninstall the beast and that was no easy task, lots of time editing the registry.
I hope Sony have got the thing better under control if they're using it with V6 or I can see this becoming a major PIA for a lot of users.

With regard to the current problem you guys are having with it, it'll help whoever is trying to sort this one out to know what OS and what service packs you've got installed. Also are you logged in as admin or equivalent.
Bob.

I am using SP2 on a Windows XP Pro machine.

Logged on as administrator/equivelant..

Turned off all av and other security measures when installing.

Will keep trying though....

how's your firewall setup? Farss mentioned that it wants to access network stuff (what doesn't now a days? Annoying). Mine has only tried to access durring the install, but if it can't access a loopback client then maybe it can't install.
DGrob wrote on 4/30/2005, 6:10 AM
Also XP Pro, SP2, administrator.

I now know quite a bit more about MSSQL than I did before, but have still not been able to get an install of the Sony version.

mssql is disabled in the services menu. Got an error msg when I tried to activate it. Have uninstalled and reinstalled V6 from the 6a update download repeatedly, no luck. Consistant hangup in the SQL installation with 3 to 11 seconds "remaining." Still studying, still no media manager.

I think I understand your loopback client reference. How would I go about dropping any system security blocks to that access?

Thanks for you attenion. Darryl

I am having the exact same issue. I have a linsys wg54 router. I will look for some archaic setting on the router and try again.

Any idea how to just retry the SQL Server install without a complete V6 reinstall? I've got V6 setup nicely with my assorted toolbar icons, etc and am already working it without media manager enabled. Bit tiresome to have to redo while I work this SQL thingie(s). Darryl

You might check this series of messages out for troubleshooting help.

With vegas, the log file would be named vegas60.log however.

I have not personally observed this behavior:

"Part of the engine keeps trying to find something to connect to every few minutes which caused major grief with real time performance."

but it could be because we do not install the sql networking libs along with MSDE and only connect to it using the shared memory protocol.

I've gotten a successful install off the CD by disabling Norton (after all that). Vegas will still not initialize MM. "MM failed to initialize. From the vegas60.log file:

I've just reinstalled V6 and started getting these strange SQL messages, which I've solved for now by uninstalling Sony Media Manager from Windows Control Panel.

The strange thing is I didn't get this SQL stuff when I originally installed V6 two weeks back. It may be Windows related - I did a system restore after having MPEG2 render problems, but I've still got XP SP2 going.
pelladon wrote on 5/2/2005, 11:09 PM
If there was a problem during the install (of SQL), you have no choice: uninstall and reinstall.
MUTTLEY wrote on 5/3/2005, 12:31 AM

Though it seemed to work when I first installed V6 I had turned it off to save on startup time but then went to enable it again as it was reported on this forum having it off seemed to crash Vegas during capturing. Now I'm getting the error: Media Manager initialization failed. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas 6 to no avail. A wee bit "Damn if ya do, Damn if ya don't"

You know, the only error I get is V6 crashing on capture with MM turned off. Turn MM back on and capture works again, no prob. Turning the SQL server service on and off doesn't have any side-effects for me. And I have Symantec Antivirus running the whole time.

Very strange. You should have the following directory with a few files in it:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\Media Library Templates 2

If you look in the Add/Remove Programs list, do you see entries for all 3 of these?

1. Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SONY_MEDIAMGR)
2. Sony Media Manager 2.0
3. Sony Vegas 6.0

If not, try

1. Uninstalling all 3 of them
2. Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager
3. Reboot
4. Try installing with your Norton stuff disabled
DGrob wrote on 5/3/2005, 10:44 AM
I show all 3 programs in Add/Remove Programs list. Still cannot get Media Manager to initialize. What's up with the error log posted above?

Your error log indicates that this directory either does not exist or does not contain any .medialib-bak files:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\Media Library Templates 2

Can you use Windows Explorer to verify that?

What is puzzling is that if you have the 3 programs listed installed, their installers create this directory and place a file in it.

Are you using Vegas 6.0a? Your comment about "install off the CD" makes me think you may have 6.0.

Can you try this (each step is critical):

1. Uninstall all 3 programs from add/remove programs
2. Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager
3. Reboot
4. Try installing with your Norton stuff disabled
5. Check to see if that directory is there and contains a file?

Do you have ACID 5.0 or 5.0a also installed?
DGrob wrote on 5/3/2005, 12:11 PM
Explorer - C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\Media Reference Libraries - BUT NO Media Library Templates 2. "Media Reference Libraries" folder is empty.

Verfied I have 6a. I've been accessing the CD to reinstall Media Manager over several tries. I had originally installed 6a, reinstalls report that I have a newer version of V6, and bypasses the installation to get me to the Media Manager component. Can I install MM independently?

I do not have Acid 5.0 or 5.0a installed. I do have Screenblast Acid 4.0 installed.

I will now proceed to attempt your recommended uninstall/reinstall. I may be drunk later.

Thanks for your continued support. Darryl
MUTTLEY wrote on 5/3/2005, 12:11 PM
Did all that was suggested but also took the liberty of deleting the Vegas 6.0 folder as well as the C:\Program Files\Sony Setup\Vegas 6.0 folder, just to be thorough. After reinstall it does indeed work again. Just not sure how it broke in the first place ... though at the end of the day just glad its back.

It works! FYI, I took Ray's suggestion and did a complete cleaning of V6 and Sony Setup. Rebooted, disabled Norton, ran V6a download and reregistered, and it works!

I think the original attempt with Norton blocking some of the transactions required created a mosaic of incomplete files and folders. Clean house and start from scratch with a reboot - voila!

Thanks to all. Darryl

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but its back, same thing " Media Manager initialization failed. " again. Haven't installed or uninstalled anything, nothing on my system has changed.

Do we have a better idea what's causing it or am I just going to have to uninstall and reinstall every few weeks ? Get everything set up just the way ya like and kaput.

Hi,

still got the same problem. Installation of media manager caused error message.
Did somebody solved the problem yet ?

Just a *bump* to make sure that the powers that be catch the fact that it was fixed after a complete and painful reinstall but crapped out again. Seems pointless to go through the whole uninstall/reinstall again before finding out why this is happening.

If it helps the body of knowledge on this issue, I have tried all of the suggested steps and with one of my systems, no matter what I attempt, Media Manager will not run. I have two other systems on which it does run. All three are Dell Systems running Windows XP Pro. On the system which will not run Media Manager there is 512 mb of RAM. The others have 2 gig. The processor on the laptop that won't run it is a bit slower (Pentium M at 1.6 ghz) than the two desktops which will. I have uninstalled everything, deleted directories, turned off Norton, etc and Media Manager does not. The laptop has Windows Office 2003 Professional on it. That includes Access 2003. The other two desktop systems do not have it.
