Unable to Print To Tape With Sony DHR-1000 and Vegas 5.0d

tnw2933 wrote on 3/21/2005, 12:57 PM
I have just completed a standard definition DV project in Vegas 5.0d, and I wanted to use the Print To Tape function to save this project to DV tape. I have a Sony DHR-1000 DVD deck connected via an OHCI compliant firewire card in my dula 3.6 GHz Xeon workstation. When I open the File>Capture Video dialog in Vegas and then move to the Print To Tape tab, my deck appears to be initially recognized by Vegas, but then a few seconds later I get an error message saying that "A Device Communication Failure has occured" and telling me to cycle the deck on and off. I do this and I can tell from the window XP tone that the deck is recognized but once again I get the same error message about a communication failure after a few seconds and the transport controls remain grayed out so that I cannot proceed with the Print To Tape function.

Please note that this Sony DHR-1000 deck is readily recognized by other applications on this system that access it via firewire and there are no communication failures with these other applications -- only with Vegas 5.0d.

Is there any solution to this problem that will allow me to capture video from my Sony DHR-1000 or use the Print to Tape function?

Thanks in advance for responding.

Tom

I think that's an obsolete deck isn't it? From memory it's the consumer version of the DSR-30. Had a bit of grief with some of the early Sony decks and most other things. Having other 1394 devices in use seems to be the problem.
I suspect it's the early 1394 chips that Sony were using, try having ONLY the deck connected and see if it'll work, this certainly worked for the DSR-30.

Folks,

I should have added that this worked fine in an earlier version of Vegas (Vegas 4), and other editing programs that I use (for example Newtek's Video Toaster 4) have no problem whatsoever accessing and controlling the Sony HDR-1000. The problem is clealry with Vegas' 5.0 Capture Utility.

Marty: Where did you find a DHR-1000? I've been looking for one for the past six months without success. We have one which we use with Vegas 4.0, and I've found it to be a great deck. Want another for our second editing room, even it that means using 4.0 instead of 5.0

Tom,

Not sure what the problem is..probably in the OS drivers, but I have two DHR-1000s and they both work fine with two computers running Vegas 4.0d.

Gary,

Thanks for responding. My DHR-1000 worked fine with Vegas 4.0's Capture and Print to Tape Utility. I guess I can only hope that Sony will correct this in Vegas 6.0.

I use Vegas 4 and sometimes find that the capture utility in Vegas 3 works better. I purchased Vegas 2,3 and 4 but stopped there because in my experience notions such as: " I guess I can only hope that Sony will correct this in Vegas 6.0" have proven not to be the case with long standing problems. Bells and whisltes are for new versions not the repair of long standing problems.
Anyway, why should they fix them. Virtually everyone will buy the new version anyway and complain later on as they always do.
In all fairness, Vegas 4 was the best version to date mostly because of the introduction of a truly useful bell and whistle........the color correction tools.

John

But I sure as heck would love it if they fixed the flash frames, audio flatlines, amateurish credit rolls, titler, dopey ripple edit function, etc.

As I suggested, the problem is probably not from Vegas.

Gary,

You are correct. I have determined that the problem is not with Vegas 5.0. I did three things that proved this. First I reinstalled Vegas 4.0e and ran into the same problem, i.e. "Communication failure with device" message. Second, I opened Windows Movie Maker (supplied with Windows XP Pro, and it, too, could not utilize my Sony DHR-1000 deck. Third, I disconnected the firewire output of my Sony HDR-1000 and connected my Sony HDR-FX1 (configured to output HDV as DV) to my Xeon using the same cable that was used to connect the Sony HDR-1000. Vegas 5.0's capture utility immediately recognized the Sony HDR-FX1 and allowed full displya of video and full transport controls. EVerything behaved exactly as it should.

I am currently uisng Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Xeon. The last time I successfully used Vegas' capture with this system I was running Windows 2000 Pro. It appears that at some point in moving to Windows XP Pro SP1 or Windows XP Pro SP2, the IEEE1394 device drivers have changed in some way that does not allow me to connect to my Sony HDR-1000. I am now trying to see if go back to the XP Pro SP! 1394 drivers if my Sony HDR-1000 will work. Some people on teh internet report having to do this to get their video device recognized by thei rediting software in Windows XP Pro SP2. I'll report my results if successful.

Tom,

I had the same problem with my DHR-1000 after I had installed SP2. The problem comes from the msdv.sys-driver. After having replaced it with the version prior to SP2 the DHR-1000 works fine again.

Have a look at my post here:

As far as I know there's no patch from MS yet...

Hope it helps!

Stany,

Thanks for responding with these links. Unfortunatley I tried replacing the msdv.sys file according to the procedures in the link that you gave to me, but I still cannot communicate with my HDR-1000 deck. I am using version 5.1.2600.0 of the msdv.sys driver. Would you be kind enough to send me a private e-mail and let me know the version number that you are using of msdv.sys? My e-mail address is tnwheeler@nc.rr.com.

Thank you again for your help.

Stany,

Cancel the above request. I found one more instance of MSDV.sys that I had not replaced with the older (SP1 version) of that file. Now everything works perfectly. NIce of Microsoft to foul up this and never fix it.

Tom,

I'm glad the problem is solved !
FYI: I have exactly the same version of msdv.sys: 5.1.2600.0
I wonder when MS is going to fix this...this problem exists since the release of SP2...
