Subject:Distortion when recording at 24bit

Hi,

I've been using Soundforge to record my band, and one day on a whim I switched the bit depth to 24bit before recording. I have a creative audigy; which I think supports 24bit. The recordings for that day are bizarely distorted, it sounds like we're underwater with a motorcycle or something....

So I figured ok, don't record at 24bit. I can live with that for recording jams. Thing is, everytime I start a new file in Soundforge it defaults to 24bit and I have to switch it back again. As far as I can tell there isn't any place to change that default. I don't recall doing anything other than going right-click/properties on the new file and picking 24bit under the format tab.

I guess this isn't a horrible problem, because I can just go in a pick 16bit each time, but I worry that I might forget. We tend to smoke/drink at practices, and I don't want to lose a nights recording.

Thanks for any help!

On the Record window, click the "New" button and set the format there. Forge has always defaulted to the last setting made there for me.

If you intend to do anything even remotely professional, dump the Audigy and get a decent card. Echo and Maudio seem to be the major preferences for Sony app users (of course there are many other choices as well).

Also check out www.rme-audio.com, I've had excellent results with their hardware/drivers, WinXPProSP1.

I wasn't even aware you could record in 24 bit with Sound Forge. Is this only with the full version?

SF Audio Studio is limited to 48 kHz, 16 bit.
