video and audio stuttering on capture

I tried to pull in from a mini-dv tape and the video and audio stuttered, as if a few frames were being discarded. Of course the dropped frames read '0'. The video pulled into vegas displayed the same stuttering.
Then I played back the tape on my camcorder and it was playing video smoothly, but the audio was gone. The strange thing was that on the camcorder, the audio mode kept blinking '16bit stereo' instead of the usual solid (not blinking) '16 bit stereo'
A completely different tape worked fine. Sounds like it may be the tape? Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

I assume that you are capturing from a firewire?

I have experienced similar problems with a Canon XL-1 and a JVC GY-DV500.

The XL-1 has constant audio dropouts in the datastream.
The DV500 has constant video dropouts in the datastream.

I finally bought a Panasonic AG-DV1000 Mini-DV deck and all problems went away. I presume the firewire implementation on these cameras is marginal.

I spoke with an editing pro here in my town, and he suggested it may be that the original was shot with a pro camera using a high audio bitrate. Considering that my camcorder only shows 12 or 16 bit options, this could be the problem. I wonder?
Unfortunately I don't have a dedicated mini-dv deck .
