mpeg encoding

i read in spot's book "hdv:what you need to know" that it's better to encode from the timeline. i'd like to try a different program (other than mainconcept). is there a way to encode with another program from the timeline and if not is my best option to render the timeline into an uncompressed avi and import it into a program and convert? thanks a lot and thank you to spot for writing this great book.

Why don't you try debugmode's frameserver to serve out your render.

Lately, I've been using debugmodes Frameserver to serve from the timeline to TMPGEnc, so I could use the 2 pass VBR when encoding (because I'm only on Vegas 4 and DVD-A1.0) and have had good results so far. The frameserver works great.

Yup, Debugmode frameserver. Just used it two days ago on a long encode sent from the timeline to the Mainconcept external encoder.

i got the frameserver to work with one mpeg encoder but i can't get it to work with the cinemacraft encoder. is it the same quality video if i render the timeline to an uncompressed avi and then encode in cce? is there something you lose (colorspace)? thanks.

What happens when you try it with the Cinemacraft encoder? Do you get an error message? When you start Debugmode's frameserver in Vegas, you can choose the colorspace that will be Frameserved into your external application. If you have been using RGB, change it to YUY2 (or vice versa). See if Cenemacraft's encoder is happier.
