Newbie to Vegas - Preview seems to be in ultra slow motion

Hi,
I'm a total Vegas newbie. When previewing an imported video file it seems to play in ultra slow motion - I'd say a 10th of normal speed or slower. It doesn't matter whether it's an .avi, .wmv, .mpg, or a simple .mp3 imported as an audio track. It doesn't matter whether it's a high bitrate or low bitrate clip. Everything plays extremely slow to the point of preview being useless. At timed the preview is actually faster when rendering.

I reloaded premiere 6.0 and every clip plays at full speed even with real time effects. All clips play fine in apps like WMP.

As I'm a complete newbie I'm assuming there is some simple setting I'm overlooking. I've searched the forums and have come across a couple of problems that seem similar though no solutions.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mick

Have you got the preview window quality set to 'Best' and/or any of the 'Full' settings? On my computer, these settings don't run at all well for preview purposes. I usually use the 'Preview (Auto)' quality setting as best compromise on speed and quality.

Hi,
I've tried all the setting down to draft/auto. Nothing seems to help. Even if I only import a single mp3 (no video whatsoever) into the project it plays ultra slow ( see picture). To get to 5 seconds on the timeline while previewing in this picture took around 25 seconds in real time.

I'm sure I must be doing something stupid.

Thanks

Hi again,
Problem solved. As usual as soon as you ask for help it gets solved. I've been uninstalling and reinstalling and playing with every setting I can think of for two days. Ten minutes after I ask for help I try uninstalling one more time out of desperation & after reinstalling it now works fine. God only knows why.

Thanks again

Glad your problem is solved--You might also consider turning off some of those startup menu items---they really do effect performance--zone alarm, weather bug etc.

It could be this:
Under the track headers there are two controls for Rate, one blue with two arrows pointing left & right and one yellow triangle. You might accidentely have moved the triangle a little bit to the left. Hence the slow playback. Double click it to restore to normal speed.

Hi again,
Thanks for the tips guys. I'll keep them in mind if the problem arises again. All still working fine atm - touch wood :)

Thanks again
