Has it ever worked? I'm guessing, no. When you plug in the IEEE 1394 device, does you computer see it - as in it prompts you what it's supposed to do?

Try tuning on your firewire device BEFORE starting Vegas. I think it should work wither way, but in the past I've had to restart Vegas when I powered on the device after starting Vegas.

I've left my DV deck in Record/Pause mode before when editing, if you are using a camera or deck, make sure it's not in the record/pause play mode.

Also, go to Options>Preferences>Video Device and make sure the OHCI Compliant IEEE/DV

Why then would it work in print to tape, but not output to External Monitor?

Interesting. Is this a DV camera, or similar device? It seems to me that for some reason you are only seeing it when you are printing to tape, almost as if Vegas is sending a preview signal, but your device only outputs to the external TV when it is engaged in record mode. (Just a thought)

Yep, it's a DV camera. (tried it with multiple cams just to make sure)
The camera wasn't in recording mode (I disabled the DV device controll)

I'm stumped, but I'll check it out when I get to another camera (I lent mine to a freind for the weekend)

Thanks for the help.

Make sure your camera does "on the fly" firewire to analog conversions (A.K.A. "E-E" conversion). Not all do. If it doesn't, I don't think external monitor preview will work.

if it didin't, why would it work with print to tape in VCR mode?

That's what "E-E" conversion is all about: the camera will convert a DV signal to analog WITHOUT recording a tape.

It wasn't recording to tape though, that's the thing I can't figure out.

However I haven't tried making sure that it was on IEEE in the video tab

One of the cameras that I tried it on was the DVX100 so I can't imagind that thatwouldn't be E-E

Here's a couple of additional things to look into:

- some cameras that have the "pass through" feature (transmitting IEEE signal from PC to analog monitor) must first be enabled, or have the feature switched on; in some SONY cameras this is an LCD onscreen menu item that must be toggled on;
- In VEGAS make sure the Options>Preferences>Video Device recognizes your IEEE device AND the "Recompress edited frams" box is checked.

Good luck.

OK it's all working now, but I was wondering if there's any way to get it to be completely in sync with the laptop audio, or get the audio to be sent via the IEEE?

Are there any settings that you guys use to get a sync'd video?

Thanks

Try using the "Classic Windows" Audio drivers rather than ASIO. I get much better sync this way.
