Got the NEC - Its great! No bugs, errors or crashes! Used the Pioneer aswell. Sony can be slightly overpriced yet deliver same results as above. i'd recommend the NEC any day! What burning software are you using?

your performance will come from the enclosure you're going to use.

I've got the NEC in an external enclosure. I picked it based on a review I read (they actually reviewed a large number of DL burners). I've been quite happy with it so far.

If you're thinking about burning Ritek DL media though, you will absolutely need version 2.18 of the firmware - you can find it on the NEC Danish web site (not on the US site for some reason).

I've been using CopyToDVD to burn with it - I've not yet tried to see if DVDA will handle the burner.

Ok, NEC seems to be a fav here, and I like its pricing. I think I'll have to go with that one (or the new ND 3520).

Any ideas on the enclosure?

I plan to use both DVDA and Nero when burning.

I love this forum.

Well I have the 108 and I love it, I also have the sony 700 and it is have probs with new media.
Things I've noticed since the 108,
1. when playing dvd in player with disc from sony it sounds like the laser is tracking harder then with disc from 108.
2. when burning, sony writes lead-in very slow, 108 is 50% faster. As far as I know the lead-in/lead-out is burned at 1x only
3. The 108 has so far burn farter then what was listed on media i.e. 8x ritek burned at 10-12x

The NEC got the best reviews in the latest roundup of this class. However, I picked up the Toshiba 16x & 12 X DVD burner. It arrived after the NEC, was compared to the NEC and won the review.

It cost $99.00 at Fry's and came with Nero 6.6.

Chanimal:
Where's this review? I'd like to read it cause I'm also thinking about buying a burner. I saw a Pioneer 108 that seemed a good deal (105 can$) but if I can find the best brand for burning with both Nero and DVDA I'll be happy.
And what about all this double layer cntroversy? There was a post on this forum some time ago. And as I check different sites concerning burners, I notice the single layer burner is less and less present on the shelves.
What about the LG 4160?
The HP stuff?
What model # was this Toshiba? is it the 5372?
Thanks!

Ok, I just found a nice site that tested most of the burners mentioned here...
http://www.extrememhz.com/reviews.shtml

As far as burning quality is concerned, this Toshiba doesn't seem extraordinary but for ripping, reading DVDs and burning CDs it's very good.
Burning DL discs is very good too with this burner.
Pioneer 108 seems superior as for burning quality but has it's weaknesses in other areas.
And so on for Lite-On, BenQ and other burners...
HTH, at least it did for me!
