further on from my REwire problems, I now have a situation where on startup [in rewire mode in particular], often [not ALWAYS i should stress], I get the plugin scan which takes FOREVER, The windows error sound is burnt into my brain!!!, In fact I am goign to have to disable that folder because this is making the program unusable. I already had to disable the media manager. my rewire does not work without pops and clicks. Am i the only one who seem to be experiencing so many probs???

help!

marll

PS... I now find I CANNOT disable the default VST folder!!!! Arghhhhhhh

First a suggestion:
Turn off your system sounds. This can get real nasty if hardware is trying to share with your system sound playback.

Second, do you have a list of VST plugins you own?

it is the plugins in cubase that are causing the problems.
i haven't time to go thru and enumerate them right now. suffice to say that most of them do not work...

which is fine, i'd expect that but only once should i have to put up with this scan....

don't worry about it, i am gonna give up soon, will have to wait for an update or whatever,,,

You may have to wait forever. In general, Steinberg doesn’t play well with others. They invented the VST plug-in technology so you can use plug-ins from any vendor. Then they purposefully disable their VST plug-ins so that they only work with their hosts. Once I found this out, I stopped using their products.

I had the same problem - I just went into the plug-in manager (in Preferences) and disabled the Steinberg ones.

I also had problems with the location of the VST folder - Acid expects it to be in \Steinberg, but it is normally in \Steinbeg\Cubase SL/SX. I added a secondary folder for it to look in.

Also, once you get them disabled, close Acid and restart, to make sure it has saved the config. I had a problem with MIDI ports that was making Acid crash when I changed preferences, so it wasn't getting to save the new plug-in settings. Just do one thing at a time, and make sure it is right before proceeding.

Hope this helps!

Hi johnny,, Out of the 30 or so vst plugins that come with sx3 ,,,12 of them are availiable along with fx automation in sony programs(acid 5, vegas 5, cda 5, and sf7. they also are available in project5 and sonar3

That’s good to hear. Perhaps it depends on if they are available on their own (in which customers would expect them to work in other hosts) or if they came with a Steinberg product. I know I had a copy of Cusasis VST 4 and all of the VST plug-ins gave an error specifically that it was not a Steinberg host. 12 out of 30 is less than 50%. 100% of Sony’s DirectX plug-ins work with SONAR.

And I appreciate that. I can only speak from experience and these forums do have a way of keeping us all honest. Thanks, ;-)

You can disable the plugin directories by hacking the registry:

regedit

current user>software>sony>acid 5>metrics>
(this is from memory - I'm at work & can't check properly)

there should be two keys "search 1" and "search 2". "search 1" is the default vst plugin search folder for vst fx - just set the directory to blank - this worked fine for me.

you'll also see below there is a directory for vsti as well - you can also change this.

Sorry, it's from memory - I'll check once I get home and post another message with the exact details. Could you find the keys "search 1" and search 2"?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sony Media Software\ACID Pro\5.0\Metrics\VstCache\SearchPaths

Path 1 is the default path and Path 2 and Path 3 are the alternate paths that you put in

Thanks JohnnyRoy!!

This VST default thing was absolutely driving me crazy. I couldn't even launch ACID when I had Waves installed on Cubase. Since you could not get rid of the default VST path (which I don't need!) I had to deinstall Waves completely!!

I really don't understand what was going on in Sony's heads that they didn't allow you to change the VST default path!!

I hope they going to change that!

I deleted teh path in the reg and everything is fine. Yippie!!
