Can someone please point me to a script that,

* Browses to a folder and renders all the files to a specific file type using a specific template.

Capture Cutter can do this kind of Batch conversion. See the instructions at the link below

Did you read the other batch render post just a few days ago? I posted a link in that thread to a script that renders all projects in a folder. There are actual several. Follow all the links I provided and you will find what you want.

EVERY batch render script that I've downloaded and tried seems to IGNORE my request to render to ac3 - they render to mpg fine, but it just seems to ignore ac3 - what is wrong?

There is a bug in Vegas 5.0b when rendering to AC3 with a custom template from a script. The fix is described here.
