Render crash

JackWhite wrote on 10/23/2004, 12:31 PM
Whenver I try to render to mpeg2, Vegas 5 keeps crashing . The dialogue box states that the Application Name is Vegas5.0.exe. The Application Version is 5.0.0.260, The Mod Name is mpgvout.004, Mod Version 1.3.26.0, offset 0000ca2c.

Can anyone please help? I upgraded from Studio 9 to avoid all these crashes.

"The Application Version is 5.0.0.260" should be 160 not 260 so I'm guessing it is a typo.

mpgvout.004, Mod Version 1.3.26.0 is the latest mainconcept mpeg encoder.

My guess is that there may be a conflict and the wrong version is being used (registry setting?)

I would do a search for mpgvout.004 and right click/properties/version tab and check for other versions. If you find another version, move it to another location temporarily and try to render.
Make sure the one in Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG is the 1.3.26.0.

Also are you using sp2?

hmm...I've had rendering problems lately and have SP2 installed. Do you think there is a connection between sp2 and rendering problems?

There have been a number of problems related to sp2 for various software. Sometimes it is a coincidence sometimes it can affect related software or hardware.

A Google search for Sp2 problems shows 775,000 pages.

But for troubleshooting weird problems uninstalling and reinstalling is sometimes necessary just to eliminate as much as possible.

I found a number of problems in my system after installing Sp2 because it isn't a default system. (I changed a number of settings in WinXp) and Vegas had problems. So I got rid of Sp2.
Also Nero had to be upgraded if I wanted sp2.

So if everything works - great. If not, well get rid of the unnecessary things.

Thanks Nickle. Yes it was a typo. I checked the mainconcept file and it does seem to be the right one. I am using SP2.

However, I have seemed to have solved my render problems but would like others' thoughts / advice. When I was having trouble with Studio rendering mpeg2, I saw a few posts suggesting that heat was the problem and that trying to cool the pc helped. I have to admit that I thought this a coincidence and couldn't beleive it was actually the cause of the problemt. I use my PC for a number of purposes and never had problems with crashes or heat before. I do realise that mpeg rendering is pretty CPU intensive.

Anyway I have tried rendering with the side panel taken off my PC and every time I have rendered the same project that previously faeeld (after about 30 odd minutes by the way), it rendered fine. So, my quesiton to those hopefully more tech minded than me is whether it feasible that heat could be the problem of these crashes? Why would heat cause the render to crash? The OS doesn't crash so it can't be a critical heat problem. Would it be the CPU or RAM that is getting too hot? Anyone else come across this happening? Would increasing RAM help (I currently have 512)? Any cooling suggestions, or should I just release the side panel when rendering?

Would appreciate any advice / thoughts / assisance with this one!

You pretty well answered your own question. Removing the cover cooled the PC and stopped your rendering problems as you described them.

The cpu generates lots of heat, especially when running at 100% for extended periods, Same for the hard drives and video cards and ram and the motherboard chipsets and power supply and l1 and l2 cache.. In other words, everything is affected by heat.

It only takes some momentary overstress to cause lockups, glitches, freezes and data loss.

Overclockers try to finetune their PCs by trial and error. When it locks up...you went too far.
There are multiple fan solutions, larger cases, bigger power supplies, High speen fans etc. But taking the cover off is cheaper and easier in your case. So if it works you are OK.
