Comparison: Vegas Movie Studio vs Vegas 5

Hi all,

I'm trying to decide between Vegas Movie Studio and Vegas 5 and had a few questions that I need some help with.

I want to compare some of the features of the two products, but the comparison chart here: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/Products/showproduct.asp?PID=932&FeatureID=7790 does not give me enough information.

Video effects:
Movie Studio :Over 180
Vegas 5: ???

2D and 3D video transitions:
Movie Studio :Over 170
Vegas 5: ???

I'm new to video editing and have used Microsoft Movie Maker enough to know its severe limitations; will I be happy with Movie Studio? Or should I just go ahead and move into Vegas 5 Production Suite?

TIA,
Alan

I'd start with Movie Studio and upgrade from there, given where you've been working in the past. iT'S A fast, easy upgrade, and projects from Movie Studio can be opened in Vegas.

I agree. It's a great place to start and learn your way around the interface, which is similar to Vegas. The features in Movie Studio (formerly Video Factory) will keep you occupied for a long time and the professional features in Vegas aren't essential for most of the work we do.

My only worry is that Vegas Movie Studio lacks a color correction tool that Vegas 5 has. I'll be importing home video from a SVHS-C camcorder via a Canopus ADVC100. And some of the footage will possibly need to be corrected. Is there a way for Movie Studio to handle that automatically?

I have an earlier version of Vegas that doesn't have the advanced color correction tools and I do everything I need with the standard color correction and levels plugins. If you decide you need the convenience of the advanced tools later you can upgrade any time as Spot suggested.

Really, I bought Video Factory (now called Movie Studio) as someone with advanced linear editing skills, and I still found it about a two-year learning curve before I felt a need to upgrade to Vegas. Movie Studio is a powerful and capable editor besides being about $400 less expensive.

Buy Movie Studio then upgrade to Vegas - it is cheaper than buying Vegas straight out and you get DVD Architect (albeit a cut down version). I did.
