That's correct. It's a lot lighter than carrying a field monitor, plus it's got a lot of other tools. Can be used for capture or simply monitoring or both. I'm not sure what more you're looking for it to do? It's software....therefore needs a computer.
Has an audio monitor, waveform monitor, peak indicator for audio or video, DVR (digital video recorder) and a bunch of other tools, not to mention the focus cards and exposure cards.

Thanks Spot,

Doesn't sound like I'd use it much - most of my stuff is on-the-run hand held, at kids' homes or at school.

And - until the new Sony HDV is out, my Mini DV camera is pre firewire!

If you're on the move, the Nnovia is the ticket for you. But it requires Firewire too...unless you get the A2D unit.

Pete, you have a "similar" shooting load as I. Community & Event work . ..

I've "racked" my brains thinking how I could benefit and then USE easily with my Run 'N Gun type of activity. There is no doubt that this is omne remarkable piece of s/w . . . trying real hard to think of ways & where I could drum up "need" to balance my "greed" - hah!

Grazie

I agree.. for Run N Gun.... it just won't work (IMHO)... but for anything where you will be capturing at a fixed location for some time... it would be PERFECT...

for instance.... Capturing a 2 day conference

Doesn't anyone make a wireless xmit/receive with firewire porting? Seems like, with the number of firewire devices, this would be a good seller. Maybe the bandwidth requirements would drive the price too hi.

I would *definitely* use DVRack for my narrative and commerical projects - especially for assuring NTSC legal picture, and for green-screen acquisition and tests.

When you need ultra-critical evaluation of DV, this is the tool.

Wireless firewire is just coming out. If it ends up working with DV, man that will be slick.
Hey Spot, have you tried doing a multitrack audio capture in Vegas while capturing/monitoring with DV Rack? Is DV Rack heavy on the CPU?
